I enjoy no longer having to be online to play my original ACII, and having bonus content absent from my bought copy.

I may buy a gamepad. Do you think it's better to play AC2 or is it just about getting used to keyboard/mouse for this game ?

I prefer gamepad (wireless 360). I played with m+kb for a while and didn't like it.

360 pad is much better than mouse and keys.

I have 3 360 pads (chillstream, 360 and ryu madcatz) plus an arcade stick and use neither of them lol

My guess from looking at the files is you have to extract the package to the game's folder, and configure it (make the proper mapping, etc).
If it doesn't work, it probably uses one of the other DirectX XInput DLLs, so you have to rename the main DLL to the other names until you find the correct one used by the game. In the Readme there is a list of names. 
Also make sure to use the latest version:
