|
 |
Not sure if anyone is interested in actually seeing Afghanistan footage outside of the regular media channels but if you are here are some shots taken on the Canon mark II 5D courtesy of Mike Yon (one of a very few number covering the side of the conflict no sees or seems to care about)
3rd-17th Field Arty (Stryker Brigade) in action on 28/4/10
Quote: | These weapons are ultra-accurate. The commanders are careful with their fire because the guns are also very powerful. When a “fire mission” comes in, the soldiers use the computer to calculate the shot. When you watch the soldiers in action, you can see that they must have practiced this a thousand times. Or more. They just can’t afford to be wrong, and the people who depend on the cannons sometimes cannot wait – so the soldiers must fast and accurate. |
Quote: | They use various sorts of ammunition. The most accurate is called “Excaliber,” and it’s a GPS guided smart bomb that is fired from these cannons. The Excaliber is fantastically precise – more accurate than any sniper – and can make first round hits on the targets 5, 10, 20 miles away. Recently, we had a software glitch with the Excaliber rounds which would have made them inaccurate within certain calendar dates. There are still some glitches but there is no doubt that we could use a lot more of Excaliber. The incredible first-shot accuracy allows our people to more specifically target and reduce civilian casualties.

... and where are the 'in action' shots promised in the title?
Today I didn't even need to use my AK. I gotta say it was a good day. (c) - Ice Cube

It's the mainstream media who don't care. |
Sweet, that's good to know.

Quote: | Warthogs -- as Larry Reid said in a comment below -- are not seen as "sexy" aircraft. Except by the infantry. In which case Warthogs are a Perfect "A-10"! Americans and Brits on the ground think A-10s are about as sexy as it gets. (Warthogs, F-15E's, and Kiowa Scout Weapons Teams are like Charlie's Angels.) It's funny, though. I had dinner a couple nights ago with an A-10 man. To A-10 folks, the F-16 and other fighter pilots are "pretty boys". (No kidding...that's what they say.) Warthog pilots (and Kiowa SWT pilots) are seen more like uncouth bull riders who probably have spit buckets in their cockpits. (Am not kidding.) Below is a photo I took at KAF just before the pilot strapped in to support British in Helmand. Our pilots can understand some British perfectly, but others are difficult to interpret. (Accents vary greatly.) Many of the A-10 pilots are not active duty, and during their "normal jobs" when they are not killing Taliban, they are airline pilots. Makes me comfortable knowing a military pilot is in charge. Remember Chesley 'Sully' Sullenberger." |
Quote: | Cobra Battery, 1-17th Infantry, fires high explosives and illumination from a 155mm cannon in Arghandab, Afghanistan. |
Quote: | This Reaper launched last evening from KAF. It's loaded with four Hellfires and two smart bombs. Notice the upward "V" of the tail. (Predators have downward "V".) The downlinks are excellent. I've often watched for hours in Iraq and Afghanistan as the drones track unsuspecting suspects, or actual targets. Often the hit is not made by the drone, but by other forces after the drone kept watch. The Reapers and Predators are gold to our troops -- and Secretary Gates is serious about keeping them coming.

Quote: | Helicopter over Kandahar today. Piloted by Pegasus (82nd ABN Aviation.) The green is coming back, providing increased cover for the enemy. Within about a month, the "green zone" will provide good cover for the enemy. The fighting season will have begun. |
Quote: | A new season begins. (Kandahar Province today as viewed from a Black Hawk helicopter.) |
Quote: | Warthogs -- Several A-10 crews have spent quality time with me on several occasions. I watch them suit up, get briefings, check weapons and roar into the day and night. Yet have hardly written a word. (Mostly because despite having seen them in combat, and watching them roar over us and sometimes shoot cannons or rockets at the enemy, I know ever little about A-10s. (Great aircraft with enthusiastic pilots.) Am working on a dispatch. Meanwhile, took this photo recently: |

As a added entry the Taliban have discovered a way to ID laser designation, while not perfect it'll reduce kills to 'only' 85%.

American soldier 1. Oooh we accidently bombed yet another orphanage.
American soldier 2. Never mind, grab a kid so we can show the world what heroes we are! |
No, Michael Yon covers all sides of the conflict, by suggesting that you do him a great disservice.
The photo's are time-dated and in sets reflected as to when he takes them and the circumstances.
What he was trying to say through the lens of his camera is "look, no matter how hard we try kids get hurt so we need to do better".
(forgetting the fact that this particular child like so many others was a result of taliban insurgency)
