Was thinking the same thing, at least until Guild Wars 2 comes out. But I'm still hesitating to buy the new AoC expansion.

So am I, I found LOTRO to be pretty fun as a VERY casual kind of questing MMO where you only play every now and then as I found myself to be very immersed in the game when exploring. However, I don't like paying a monthly sub for something I play very rarely. So a lifetime sub would fit for this purpose...

I may use it, I'll wait until it's close to the 30th of June and then I'll see if the population is any good, if so I might get it.

It is cheap indeed.

I heard the population in EU servers are wayy lower then US...some even suggest to buy the US copy instead of EU..dunno atleast thats what it was a year or two ago

The differences between the different subscription models (ie. free vs the rest) can be found here:

http://www.lotro.com/betasignup/vipchart.html

The FAQ has also covered the differences etc. pretty extensively.

Going F2P is pretty much a last effort a MMO could make to save itself.

I certeanly hope that it's not as serious as this move make it seem, but I'm very sceptical about the future of the game.

Never ever ever ever ever ever buy a lifetime sub to an MMO. The monthly sub the devs are getting is the best guarantee for future updates + continued support. When the monthly revenues starts to wither their publisher will start pulling off resources from the project. It's simple market economics.

The game isn't switching from monthly fee to ftp, they are adding a f2p version of the game with a lot of limitations of all kind, those who bought a lifetime subscription or pays a monthly fee will be considered as VIP wich is exactly the same as paying today only you get a stupid status name with it...

So better to wait and see Smile

Similar move increased Turbines profits from D&D:O by about 500% (read the announcement somewhere), so it is logical they will try it with LOTRO as well. Especially since there will be new games coming later this year as well as the new year. It's not pure F2P, more like extended trial.

A lot of limitations?

Maybe, I don't know, what they offer for free is fine for me. It's like DDO and I've played that game 3 weeks (a lot of hours per day) for free without problems.
I've never bought any subscription to MMORPGs, maybe that's why I'm fine with this (and because I really liked the 10-days trial ), but I don't think the limitations are a big deal. If you are a 'hardcore mmorpg player' you can buy the game (or pay for something, like quest packs or whatever), and if you play just for fun like me, the F2P is perfect.

mail limitations, chat limitations, area limitations, gold limitations ( 3g and 5g) no priority on servers queues etc. Sry too tired to link to those details just read the ftp ffaq on us forums Smile

But at least you see the point, 2 ways to play a game, hope it will stay like this.

I know, but there is no area/level/story limitation (or I can't see it), and I really don't care about Mail, Chat and stuff like that, the game is playable and I'll play it with a friend using MSN

edit: Oh, and I don't even know what 'gold limitation 3g/5g' is, so I suppose I don't care Laughing

I've read and will try to find the article once I've slept a bit, that said you'll have to buy your way out of starting areas...

Oh ye and no AH ...

EDIT yes you are limited to the 50th lvl and by this mean you can't go in or through the moria
and about the story, you ofc can't continue it once you hit the moria walls
