Lately I've been asking my self if subtitles in video games (during gameplay and cutsecenes) are a disturbance to the exprience, or helpful in order to keep track of the story. So i'm bringing it here, what do you say?

I usually turn them on. Not because I don't understand what they're saying, but because games often have background noise which drowns out the voices.

Like Dezz, I turn them on. I'm actually rather fond of subs (anime and Japanese movies have fed my love) and it's often hard to completely understand what is said in game. Either due to accents or just quiet voices with loud FX/music. Actually, I get more miffed when a game DOESN'T have them.

I absolutely require them.
Every game, I do two things before anything else.
1) Invert vertical controls.
2) Enable subtitles.
I don't know why but every single game I play, the music is loud as fuck, but when people talk it's all quiet and I can never hear a goddamn thing they are saying, so either I enable subtitles or I try to crank the volume to ridiculous amounts to make out what is being said.
So rather than adjusting the volume constantly, I just turn on subs.

i always enable them in action games, but disable them in those with more (elaborate) drama since they sometimes kinda scre up the dynamic of the dialogue

I use them all the time aswell, i find trying to listen to long ass cut-scenes while my sons laughing his ass off at some random object in the room quite difficult -.-
Im actually suprised when a game doesnt have the option for subtitles, i mean...surely theres a lot of deaf people who play games but miss out on story cause of no subs? thats just wrong.

I actually turn them off if they are on by default. They seem to distract me from gaming, I feel the urge to read anything that is on screen, even if I understand the dialogues perfectly.
I am fine with subs in movies if I don't know the language though.

I always use them. Be it movies, be it games. It's a necessity for me. Some dialogues are pretty difficult to catch at times and hence can't afford to miss them. Especially, in a game which is strong on storyline, like Mass Effect or it's sequel. It doesn't distract me at all as I have learned how to toggle between the ongoing scene and subtitle.

I usually turn them on, still it's funny to learn that even native English speakers do.

i always use subtitles in games. they are very helpful. during cutscenes or conversations they usually mention lots of made up names for locations, items etc. when you see that stuff in a written form in subtitles it's much easier to track it in objectives or quest log or what have you.
