Yeah I noticed that as well, I have a feeling you are supposed to go to the other dock guy and leave the desert missions until later though I did them regardless though it's not easy and the constant respawning makes it even harder.
(Until you gain equipment and your skills high enough to survive a bit better.)
(Then again the other areas are equally challenging so it might not matter where you begin, heh.)

Do you get to pick how your dude looks as an adult?
Or stuck with generic Greek looking dude? I want my dude to be more Romanish.
Or is it determined by the god you choose to worship? I picked Hephaestus for the armor bonus and less damage, but might as well go with Ares if it does affect stuff. >___>

The thing is that the Seer is the same level as some other dudes in the Lost Caravan area. I can take the melee and ranged tribesmen down easily but the Seer guy just destroys me with one dot spell ;o

I think there's only one male and female appearance (And child appearance of course.) so you are stuck with that aside from mods or something, unsure what can be done with the game but it might be possible to unpack the archives.
As for the door to the desert region I'm not 100% certain but I still think it's just a placeholder so it appears there is a way out but to travel around you need to talk to the guide nearby and choose a location, for possible locations you need to do quests to unlock other areas but I've only seen two so far and a small island from that fisherman once you get the option to pay him for travel.
Haven't played in a while (Busy with other stuff, Guild Wars primarily.) so I'm not very far from where I was previously, I've explored all regions and done all quests up to the minotaur maze.
(In different order, as with you I didn't find the whistle either and eventually gave up on it, there's way to much ground to cover even if you just try to dig up the area outside the cave entrance.)
EDIT: As for the seer or similar higher-level enemies I usually just spam health potions (Quality ones due to the cooldown they require.) and use damage dealing attributes and skills to bring them down, death doesn't affect much but as I said previously as soon as you leave the area or if you rest fully (To change the time of day.) everything will respawn again so some areas are best to just run trough.
(Very small aggro range for most types of foes thankfully but there are exceptions, enemies with ranged attacks tend to "see" a little further and bosses and similar can be problematic as well, most give up easily though if you run away but spells and similar doesn't really miss so that's tricky at times.)

So you guys are really enjoying the game? How is it compared to Torchlight? I found that one entertaining but very repetitive.

Should you talk to all the other teachers, mage or hunter? Can you use abilities from all three specializations? Whats the downside to being a warrior/mage or warrior/hunter? Or do you have to choose to be only one?

Some answers:
Crab: you have to use the potion when the crab start lifedraining you so it stops. You must kill it with your normal attacks.
Wolf pelts: There are some wolves at the Mount area. The pelts drop from them. Try shift clicking in the loot so it auto loots and stacks (game bug sometimes when you drag and drop)
Kid: During the kid part of the game you can test all the classes. The one that you have more afinnity for will be your main class during the rest of the game.

This game really sucks, the fact that there main highlight was the graphics is pretty disappointing, maybe if this game came out in 2005 it would have been an alright game but the graphics would still be sub par I like rpgs are most don't turn me off but this game really stunk.
If you are wondering if you should get this game pass on it.

I did all the quests as a kid on that small island and there is nothing left, can't do anything, no one left to talk to, no quests left, no where to go. What am I supposed to do now?

Hey, I can't remember. But different things happen during the day and during the night. And maybe you have to grind away and reach a certain level for something to happen.
I'm enjoying the game. Played for a few hours, but I'm getting crashes at random now.

For those who played as a warrior, who is the best god to pick in your opinion? Is hades any good with that ability to resurrect with 1/3 health/energy or the god that increases armor ratings?

There's not a huge penalty to dying, anyway.

Ahh screw this game. The constant enemy respawns are freaking insane. I enter a dungeon, decide to walk back outside, and EVERYTHING respawns?? F this.
