Wildfire comes out in a couple of weeks and might actually be a decent budget alternative , Nexus 1 is pretty much the same price as the desire in most contracts . UK market mind

Apple uses proprietary software forcing people only to be able to get whats on the market (unless you jail break it? I dunno). Has 1 shitty carrier and 1 shitty phone platform. Apple says what can and can't be purchased on their OS.
Android is here to stay and is going to wipe the floor with iphone. It's completely open source and the only limitation is hardware and your creative mind. You don't even have to put it on the google market. You can just put the .apk file up on a website for download and people can install it themselves.

Take a look at the Google Nexus One. Not sure if it is the cheapest one (probably not, as there are some older HTC models), but for the specs it has a good price.

Anyway, question : If I have a phone with Android 1.6, can I update to latest Android ? Is it just ultra-compatible ?
So that I can do pretty much most stuff that the newer and more expensive phones can ? All apps etc ?
but if its rooted, and you have access to some kind of recovery / fastboot, there is no reason why you couldnt compile AOSP youself.

most if not all phones are able to upgrade manually to the newer android. The motorola droid uses gorilla glass on it btw tough and unscratchable , OC the SOB and you got yourself a really quick phone with all the goodies.
oh it's perfectly save. It actually seems to run cooler now which I find odd. It's perfectly save up to like 1ghz but the problem with that is.....battery rape
I am thinking of getting the desire, but the lack of a keyboard (and more importantly maybe Cyanogen) is putting me off.
