So after all the pounding on this game, I decided to have a look anyways because it's built by obsidian.
And... it's freagin AWESOME !
It's closest comparison would definately be hitman with RPG elements.

Gameplay is fine !, after reading all the posts here I was expecting some Alone in the Dark 1 esque gameplay.
It might not be as uber smooth as ME2 but it's sure as hell more than sufficient.
Interactions are on Bioware level so far (exception being 1 voiceacting flaw in the beginning of the game).
I've totally dropped RDR for this one.
I'd suggest any RPG/Stealth/Shooter fan to drop by and check it out.

As an added note , after reading here I was expecting these graphics :

Luckily , it's nothing like that Smile
Though FSAA would have been nice.

BioWare level? Are you kidding. ME1 and ME2 totally take a dump all over this game (definitely Dragon Age). I'm not quite sure how far into the game you've gotten, or what play style you have chosen, but realistically the only viable non-headache way to play the game is to play it as a soldier - guns blazing. Anything else will result in frustration as you ATTEMPT to be a spy, and find the game refuses to allow you to do so. This is a shooter through and through. Playing otherwise will only lead to frustration.

The game, of course, does not look like a game from the early 1990's. That's just trolling to suggest anyone made those comments. The game does look like something from the VERY early days of the XBOX360, which is not a ringing endorsement. This game was in development for how long? Red Dead started around what, 2006? And somehow they have managed to create a polished game that does not look dated. This game looks dated.

You almost have to treat the guns like they are "spells" in an RPG - theres no one-shot one-kill spells in FF, and neither are there here, unless you use your "special ability". To me thats the one thing that takes me out of this game - how it's a spy adventure, but very little of what you do or how you play feels very spyish.

Sorry if this has been asked before, but still: what do you get when you purchase stuff in the Intel shop? Anything really useful? I understand when they offer a sniper rifle hidden somewhere, but I dunno what I'll get after buying some $12k russian mobster dossier. Thanks.

The dossiers give you "insight" on how to deal with the NPC's you interact with in the game. For example you learn from Nasri's dossier, he respects directness and jokesters need not apply. You could use this information to figure out how to bypass some of guards in the beginning of Nasri's level, as well as what dialog choice is most effective when you meet up with him.

Finished it! Smile

The game is great, esp since you can adapt your playstyle completly they way you want.

I finished it as an spy, and the last mission was kinda hard as an spy.
The whole story outcome wasn't all that suprising, but it would make an good hollywood bourne identysky film.

Overal, the game is just fun to play, so much fun that i'm now going to play completly different @ recruit and then i'm going to play it again on veteran and again completly different.

I'm really looking forward what will happen when i choose different outcomes on things and if it will give me an different story or not.

Nonetheless, look past the graphics, that game is just solid fun!

8/10!

Game is getting savaged in the press. General consensus: "Missed opportunity". While I do not agree with Destructoids review SCORE, I do agree with the review (except for the "free" part. . .I'd play it if it were free. . .well I mean I am).

I completely agree with Destructoids review. Ive been playing for 2 or 3 hours and i just cannot get into this game. I really want to, the graphics dont bother me at all, it just feels like the game is broken. Combat is broken, cover is lame, the character is such an annoying prick i dont even want to play as him, and a whole slew of other problems. Its too bad, i was looking forward to this alot.

Just finished and it as fucking AWESOME! Sorry about you guys having PC technical shit, you know what Obsidian is like Rolling Eyes I don't think they have EVER released a bug free title, but at least the 360 was consistent and I had no crashes or stuttering shit Smile I'ma gonna write up a proper review shortly, but for now;

Amazing game, technically flawed but the premise, gameplay, audio, dialogue, interaction *and* consequences combine to make a magnificent experience. If Deus Ex is a 10/10, Vampire Bloodlines is an 8/10 and Deus Ex IW is 6/10, then this is easily 8.5 or 9. Overlook the technical shit, stop thinking of it as a fucking shooter that relies solely on how well you point your gun, and instead think of it as a MUCH smaller modern-day Deus Ex clone ... and you'll not go far wrong. Strongly recommend it to everyone who has PATIENCE (and isn't a ritalin-doped Gears of Bore fagboy) to deal with some minor technical issues.

... 770/1000 GS for a single playthrough? Not bad Very Happy Missed a couple of 5GS achievements that I really shouldn't have, but that's more than likely due to the order I took the missions.

Oh and I'd say it took me around 19hrs to do absolutely everything I possible could. If I missed anything, it was VERY well hidden >_>

You are high as a kite if you think the technical shortcomings are the sole reason this game is getting pounded in the press and from players, or these supposed Gears of Bore Fagboys (way to not be a lame troll guy).

The game is an unfinished mess, that is only saved by the genre it is in, and some genuinely good moments in the game. The problem is, is that it is a chore to get to those good bits.

As for it not being a shooter - then perhaps they should have been careful enough to delineate the RPG from the FPS because they didn't do a very good job of it.

However, you liked it - so of course the legitimate technical and gameplay complaints people have must be a bunch of bullshit.

a tired dev @ May 28th 2010 2:37PM

I worked on this game (a fact of which I am not proud). I'm not here to defend it; I agree with all these reviews.

First, a comment for the guy at Cheesecake Factory - Most devs eat in the office most days, if they do go out they tend to grab something at the food court and head back. I know the execs take long lunches, but they often use them for informal meetings as well. Most of the programmers and designers very rarely ate outside the office during the time I was on this project.

There was a ton of work put into this game. The problem is that is was a ton of undirected work, or work on things that were just stupid. The Executive Producer for the game, Chris Parker (also an owner of the company), seemed to think he was the world's greatest designer ever, and created all these absolutely shitty systems and wouldn't listen to any of the real designers or devs about things that just didn't work. And you can't exactly argue with one of the owners of the company when he doesn't want to listen. He basically took over the game and dictated exactly how everything would work (or not work, as the case may be). The other producers realized this early on and just gave up, leaving Parker to micromanage all the designers and programmers directly.

Sega also was a factor, because they kept changing the design requirements (yes they had heavy influence there), which never gave the producers and designers time to actually decide on one set of features to make and polish. The blame is still mostly Obsidian's because the execution was absolutely terrible, and it was obvious 2 years ago that this game should have been scrapped. Instead, though, they focused on adding still more features and never fixed the ones they already had. That is a recipe for tons of bugs and no polish... as is obvious.

This game was just an absolute failure of production, and it's no wonder that so many of the developers left the company, even after the 40% staff layoffs. I am still happy about some of Obsidian's other current projects, New Vegas included, because they are going pretty well. Their big unannounced project is looking great and is already much better than AP ever was, and that may end up being the game that everyone was looking for with AP.

Sega should have canceled AP instead of Aliens...

Shame mate, especially since you paid good money for it. I know it's clunky and has some issues, nobody is denying that, but at least give it some time. Play it as an RPG where stats matter more than how well you can aim a crosshair. Since you've paid for it, you may as well try and get some money's worth, eh?

I know bud, but that's why I say play it as an RPG; the aiming system - or more specifically the accuracy - is based off stats. The better your proficiency in your chosen weapon, and the better the mods/addons that weapon has, the better and more powerful your shots. Also; CRITICALS MATTER! Seriously; use them! The higher your stats, the faster you can aim a critical shot (ie; your crosshair will zoom to critical in 1.5s rather than 4 or 5, which makes al the difference) - and critical shots almost always kill in one, especially critical head shots.

Can someone explain the perk 'awareness' to me please?
When I engage it I get a octagon image with some small yellow dots (sort of like a radar) but when I look the 'dots' don't match the positions of the guards.
Do the dots indicate something other than human guards?

The position of the guards shoul appear on your screen as green/ yellow/ red triangles (depending how alert they are) The direction the triangle shows is the direction the guard looks and afaik it also picks up automatic turrets.
The little octagon only shows you that the skill is active, nothing more. (coming from the pc version but that should really be the same).
