also, I want to know how big your house is that requires another "portable" computer you're willing to hook up to a keyboard to use. I can see plugging it into an HDTV/LCD and even using a mouse, but actually trying to use it as a desktop replacement seems like you're just trying to get more out of a useless toy you bought
tbh my work's network is tighter than rush limbaugh's asshole so I can't even get VPN at home, let alone folder/email access on a personal portable device. webmail on my phone is the best I get :/ |
Portable media players that are worth buying are about as easy to find as gold in my shit. They don't exist right now so the fact that this device does even close to a decent job is fine by me .. Still, like I said, it wasn't really why I bought the device, it simply does the job when I have no other options.
As for using it as a desktop replacement.. Since when is browsing the web and reading comics considered a desktop replacement ? I use it while I'm sitting on my sofa watching TV with the missus, when I'm taking a dump or when I'm travelling. The thing is FAAAR more portable than my laptop is, plus if I don't want to take the keyboard I don't need too. Most people could live without the keyboard, but typing anything on that screen annoys the shit out of me (not that massive an issue as I don't tend to use it for typing but hell, I had the extra £50 laying around so I bought the keyboard ).
Just because you can't see a reason to have the device doesn't mean its useless. Read a comic on one and you may just see why I find the thing awesome. I've been waiting far too long for coloured e-readers, this is just what I wanted for pretty much the same price as a BW e-reader.

disagree. ANY phone with WVGA resolution and 3" and higher 16:9 screen are perfectly fine. beyond that size, a decent slim netbook/notebook with 720p (ie actual HD) resolution is fine. especially for airplane or hotel room.
and as a bonus you don't have to subject yourself to itunes faggotry
|
Seriously, you must be fucking mental if you watch anything on a phone, I'm horrified that you're the one arguing about a medium to watch media and you're doing it on a phone !! I've used itunes once to activate the device, everything else is done remotely, as all my media is streamed. As for your second point it will be answered below...

get a new laptop instead of that 10 pound bastard you're likely toting around

Pah, I've got a 14" sony viao, its the perfect size for portability and still has some good power (I can play WOW on it anyway ) but the ipad is still over half the size and a fraction of the weight. Think about it. Its just a screen, you can't beat that with a laptop/netbook/anything currently on the market. I can put the iPad into the side pocket of my laptop case vs using the whole bag for the laptop.

I still enjoy a good paperback when I actually get the chance to have the time to read something that isn't a pdf or work-related I wouldn't buy a kindle either, not something I'd actually get use out of. |
I'm all about the digital revolution. I can see the point in hardcopy but it just gets in the way.

you can watch 16:9 on an iphone though
i'm pretty sure ipad is 16:9 but the ratio is set to fit the screen.
if the image isn't ruined or destroyed or distorted in anyway then it's great.
the ipad isn't meant to replace the desktop.
it's a portable device. as was advertised and as it will be for the rest of its lifespan.
it does what it's meant to do greatly. no major flaws with it.
if you want everything in a netbook you end up sacrificing some things over others.
what the ipad offers you sacrifice nothing. unless you expect more than advertised.
i love the idea of the ipad. I just want more functionality which can come at a later date.
The new display that's offered in 4g. some of the features in 4g. and it'll be a must buy.
4g right now is a must buy. it's looks on paper as the perfect phone. i'm fully satisfied with my 3g so an upgrade into 4g territory will be great.

I've watched last two 720p eps of The Pacific on ipad and loved it. Great detail, no lag, awesome.
Today I didn't even need to use my AK. I gotta say it was a good day. (c) - Ice Cube
