Dont know whether or not this will help you out erone if not no harm done. A link to frequently asked questions and several walkthroughs - I completed the game months ago on xbox so had problems recalling off the top of my head at what point you were saying your stuck at (its a 20-30 hour game after all)
The first walkthrough on that list seems very complete, has advice on bugs and glitches plus tips on how to optimize the game for pc users.

Anyone know if a crack was ever released for the 1.0b patch? I really tried to get into the game but the constant bugs/glitches/crashes have put me off.

I never used the patch and got through the full game fine. There was no crack released though.

I couldn't find any. There are mods fixing things, but no major graphical overhauls.

It adds in content that was cut out by Obsidian.
IT IS FUCKING AMAZING.

I can attest to that. I recently replayed the game with the restored content mod and it was an entirely new experience, a much better one and almost bug free, unlike the out of the box experience of the original release.
The one(Yes, only one) bug I encountered was sometimes after finishing combat, my character refused to move, easily fixed by quicksaving and quickloading.

You want the Squizzy Resolution Patcher. That's what I'm using right now and it works fine at 1680x1050 ... sadly you can't alter the UI size, unlike KoTOR 1 which had a wonderful UI mod, but at least you can play at proper resolutions.

The Vista/7 crash fix is also on that page, though you may not need it. I don't and I'm on Win7 too.

I just played this game through for the second time since it was released, using the restoration mod that fills in all the gaps that the original developers failed to complete (eg. the HK-factory). I must say that this game in this version definitely beats the first KOTOR. Some of the dialogue with Kreia is so well written, and finally a proper ending. Made me glad. Well worth a try if you, like me liked the original but felt a bit let down by the plot holes and bugs.
Yes, yes I'm back.
Somewhat.

I've actually been meaning to do my KoTOR run lately, kept getting sidetracked. I've got KoTOR 1 installed as well as a bunch of fixes/etc, but as far as I know; there's no GUI mod for KoTOR2 - unlike KoTOR.

i found some days ago that i have that version installed, tried playing it but kept getting lots of crashes. but if you say its that good i guess im gonna try my best to get it working!
i think i installed the mod over a game with modded ui (to support widescreen) and thats whats causing the crashes. did you use any widescreen mods to go with it?

You know what, I was bothered by the graphics at first too. Especially the first level (Peragus) felt bland, and I wanted to rush it through. But then once the narrative kicks in (pretty much from when you leave Peragus and until the end) with all the character interactions, the excellent music, dialogue and fantastic overall plot. You get drawn in, the atmosphere in the game is genuinely amazing (especially during the end third part of the game). I strongly recommend it.
Here's what I did:
1. Daemon Tools Pro (latest version) IDE-emulator (get the clone from usenet)*
2. Install the game + 1.0b patch*
3. Install the media patches (there are two official ones for cutscenes and music, and then there is an unofficial one for atmospheric sound (TSL Ambiance Improvement by PastramiX) (this one is pretty amazing).
4. Install the v1.7 restoration mod (previously mentioned in this thread)
*The reason for not using a no-cd crack is because all the no-cd patches for the game introduce some game-breaking bugs (like the game skipping through dialogue automatically, the hovercraft floating to the ceiling et cetera).
There are SOME annoyances still though that can be fixed:
1. Not being able to move with either WASD or mouse.
Fix: Turn V-Sync on
2. Character AI taking over so you attack before you eg. use a medpack
Fix: Turn STATIONARY AI on (for full control)
3. Unable to walk in combat (ie. so you can run around with Force Speed in jedi fights)
Fix: Toggle Combat movement to on
The HK-restoration was extremely well made. I could not tell that it didn't belong in the game in the first place. But there is so much restored that it's not even funny. You can for instance become a crime lord with the Red Eclipse, lots of missing dialogue/subquests (like the origin of mandalore), etc. etc. a lot of content that just gives you a more complete sense of what is going on, and gives you more satisfaction. (some of it is listed here: http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Cut_content_from_Star_Wars:_Knights_of_the_Old_Republic_II:_The_Sith_Lords )
Yes, yes I'm back.
Somewhat.

Ah, that would be why then. Sadly my monitor doesn't like non-native, so anything running outside of native resolutions looks like boiled ass >:[
