You think it was the general perception? Yet, AoE 3 introduced the HC shipment system, which added yet another parameter to create tactics. For me, that was a big new thing in this Age game.

I like RTS with base building: you can raid the economy of an ennemy to win. Macro and micro management were all important in Age games. Tune your eco, defend it, control ressource collection points, and manage military units.
I find that more interesting than strickly micro-maganing some units.

I guess the biggest problem with AoE3 was it was relying too much on its graphics, while gameplay remained largely the same as the old AoE games, or at least that was the biggest issue for me - can't let me play DoW, then come with this outdated gameplay and expect me to love it just because the graphics are stunning. Sad

@djaoni
No, not every game has to be DoW/CoH, but having games stuck in the 90s is not a solution either.

TBH, this game will set back RTS evolution a few years back. Yes, I know, I know. Don't fix, what isn't broken, but I think the SC formula got stuck in time.

SC was always about APM and prelearned BOs. It's not so much about battlefield tactics, as much as it is about accurate clicks. I hate that. Company of heroes is much more about the quality of clicks. It's infinitely more complex, and you can turn the tide of battle anyday.

People eat up Blizzard's unoriginal shit, like it was the second coming.

I dono if you are trolling or something but the SC2 you are describing seem to be a very different one the rest of us are playing.

sure AMP and build orders matter, but having higher AMP than your opponent never guarantees victory. you seem to be under the impression that build orders are inflexible. Maybe that's true for the first minute or 2 but after that, if you do not respond to the actions of your opponent and keep running the same build orders over and over, you'll get owned pretty fast. you can turn the tide of battle just as easily as games like CoH if you recognize and exploit your opponent's unit composition or habits.

people eating up blizzard unoriginal shit? blizzard has never been a company that came up with new and never done before gameplay. they are known for their ability to refine what is already on the market into a good game. just because everyone else went the way of CoH, it doesn't mean that is a good fit for the SC franchise and its fans. All the new features added to SC2 since SC both in terms of gameplay (watch towers, smoke/grass blocking the view, unit/building selection + smartcast, etc) and interface (improvements to replay, planet editor) are more than enough to make SC2 refreshing and new compared to the old.

SC2 looks faster to me. Shit, micromanaging is like an action game in itself.

To me too. Too fast for me, to make important game changing strategic decisions. In fact, I think the decision making process of SC ends in the first 2-3 minutes of the game, from there, it's only carrying out with pinpoint precision.

I don't like this kind of strategy.

you seem to have missed the entire macro aspect of starcraft/2. the reason many people prefer the game over others such as CoH, DoW II, or even WC3 is because of its heavy emphasis on economy over individual unit control. sure build orders matter, but to claim decision making ends after the first 2-3 minutes is ridiculous. do you not scout your opponent to see if they are teching or massing? do you not decide to expand or harass?

you seem to have a strong opinion about SC2 but seem to be misinformed on many points. I would recommend watching some high level SC/2 replays and see what is really possible with the game. see for example, savior flank and totally out maneuver opponents while using half their AMP, or players like yellow who played sauron zerg and out macroed their opponents by expanding and staving off harrasses.

I expect no less from SC2 in the future. There has already been a lot innovative play even though it's beta. Tournaments like the HDH invitational were very fun to watch and really demonstrated the potential of the game. In particular, TheLittleOne is very fun to watch because of his creativeness with his unit composition and strategy.

You could either close your eyes and keep believing that SC2 is the unoriginal reincarnation of SC, that it has not changed at all since the last game, that it requires only twitch reflexes and an completely preplanned BO and requires no battle tactics like flanks or feints. OR you can open your eyes and invest enough time in the game to truly see how fun it can be.

First of all, thanks for not taking the flame route for responding, and I think your arguments are good. I just don't agree with them. I have watched a lot of videos of pros playing, however I stopped a month ago, my hype for the game died. I also tried the beta, but didn't have an actual account, so I played from my mate.

All in all, I never said SC2 doesn't have macro at all, but you have to agree, macro is not even close to being as important as in the age series, and I like a fine balance. And micro isn't as good as CoH. It is a good meshup, it has breadth, but I think the game lacks depth. There are tactics in it, and it has reaction, but in the long run Blizzard games are as hard to play, as understanding rock paper scissors.

You can do feints, even feints with BOs, so your enemy will change his, but the rules are very strict, and due to high lethality (which imho is too high) BOs are the most important thing, assuming you have the same level of micro as the opponent.

At the end of it, SC2 like SC has little CHOICE. Very little. I'm not talking about highest tier of gaming, but in mid-high games it's all about BOs, and simple counters. Macro is almost non existent compared to the age games, where managing your villagers from second to second was as important as combat. Also, in age, there are more paths to advance, SC is pretty linear, and always has been.

It's not a bad game, it's simply not for me, because I like dynamic games and complex situations. That's why I play x4 games, because I can let my creativity lose, like I never could in any blizzard game. And although SC is the most hardcrore blizzard game, I think blizzard all things considered is a blight of the game industry.

Can't say I mind that too much.
I wear a nameplate at work so everyone can see my name there and it doesn't matter.
Why would it matter on the internet where everything matters about 99% less than in real life?

It's a bit weird that it's forced on you like that, but that's really the only problem I see there.
And you always have the choice of just..well...not posting, so I guess it's ok.

And you could always just not use your real name, Scrotum McTwiddlypants. If they want your social security number so you can't use a fake name then nobody should even bother with the forum.

As long as you don't need that shit in any of their games I couldn't care less anyway.

Hahaha, now let someone with Lexis Nexis access run his name and post his SSN online. Then someone else reading the same thread in Malaysia can empty his bank account.

Fucking idiots over at Blizzard.

Oh and since a few people asked, now, I have absolutely no plan to do that on MMO-Champion forums. (And that's not sarcasm, I really don't like the idea of real names on a gaming forum)

It's probably an experiment to see if having people post under their real name will lower the amount of flaming and trolling. Personally I don't give a shit because I don't post on the blizzard forums and to be honest this would probably make the forums way more clean than before.

Clean, yes. More formal, yes. More empty, yes. Better? No. It's the total ass backwards way of doing it. You need to encourage a forum that self regulates capped off with moderators, you don't need to change the entire fabric of the forum system itself. It's an amateur, cowardly move by Blizzard who hasn't the balls to execute correctly. I guess this is what happens when your employed moderator force crumbles under the pressure and becomes paranoid ala Tapicole.

The second phase of Betatesting Starcraft 2: Wings of Liberty is officially cancelled. We encourage you to go over to consoles since we're announcing a new brown shooter next month and it will be in first phase of closed beta 12th of August on the 360/PS3 and PC. We will choose 5.000 accounts to force themselves to play another mediocre shooter. The new game's beta client will be downloaded when you start the Starcraft 2: Wings of Liberty client. If nothing happens you have not yet been selected to participate in the "not yet announced"'s first phase of closed beta or I'm making all this up.
