How did they ever think this was going to work? Jesus, we need Star Trek internet before these things will ever be viable. Someone I know on FIOS (he had 35/35 iirc) tried it out and there was big input lag (graphics didn't look as shitty as the above pics, but he was playing some simpler games). And that's one of the best home-connections around in the States as far as I know. Epic fucking fail.

I've seen videos where it looks much better. I wonder if the quality varies somehow?

Yeah, it fluctuates WILDLY. Basically it works out that the less a scene has to change, the less visual and compression atifacts. Which pretty much negates anything faster than Star Craft Very Happy

As I said earlier, a thing like this will never be fully viable until we somehow manage to get FTL broadbands.

Light simply isn't fast enough.

Since he was so incredibly insistent that Onlive was the model of perfection, yes.
As far as I'm concerned the only way he could have written that post was if he was getting paid for it.

Light is fast, routers are not. Even if you overcome that hurdle by having a direct connection unless the game server is right next to you it's going to lag. To think that all the kids on steampowered (the astroturfers and stupid ones) tried to prove me wrong and yet here we are.

What a terrible service.

Don't worry mate; only the monumentally retarded, or the indescribably naive, believe OnLive is anything but a failure and a rip off. $50 for a game that looks like boiled ass, when natively it looks sublime, has 150ms of input lag..... and that after 2 years this "service" can turn round and say "Sorry, we're taking this back now. We know you paid MORE than you would for a retail hardcopy, but tough shit. You can't play it any more"

OnLive is a disgrace and I honestly feel sad for any suckers who try believe in it, or worse; subscribe to it.

..... and yep, we all called it last year when it was announced.

With my connection i can get a 5 ms ping to a team fortress 2 dedicated server thats in my country's capital city

I think its possible for onlive to get less than 100 ms lag in some countries if they put servers there but still, the market for this is going to be stupid americans that wont have a fast connection because america is still in the stone age of internet

They probably wont even notice the horrible lag and image quality

I HIGHLY doubt your actual latency is 5ms. You wouldn't even get that low if the server was in a house on the same block.

All Source games show a latency of 5 if you set the cmdrate high enough. (AFAIK)

You're right.

And latency playing on LAN is about 5~10ms.

http://blog.onlive.com/2010/10/04/onlive-just-play-for-free/

OnLive is free now. To clarify the monthly fee is gone, you still have to pay to play games of course. Unless, of course, you want to play a demo, these are free.

IMO, the fact that they had to change their plans this early doesn't look good for the future of their service....

Anyway, anyone wants to try a few demos now that it's free? Just for a few laughs Very Happy

I read several comments on their official site where the authors mentioned a "micro console"

So I did a google search and apparently they are creating a console of sorts...... hadn't heard of it till now

Yes, I just linked a search result because I'm too busy playing Nehrim

That has been known from day 1. Its supposed to be used on TVs when you dont have a PC to download their plugin to.

And I doubt this is out of desperation. As far as I heard people are mostly satisfied with the service. And I'm sure they'll earn plenty of money from game sales alone.

The problem is there aren't many people that are interested in this service. The few that are, might be satisfied, but how many are those people?

The majority of PC & console gamers don't care for obvious reasons. And come to think of it I don't believe casual gamers care either, they want to play Facebook and Big Fish games not titles like Just Cause 2.

IMO the only way they can get more people interested is if they make the service completely free (and I guess ad-supported..) This would definitely make more people interested in it, but perhaps it wouldn't make enough profit for them... Razz

i thought the story from day 1 was that it could stream to practically anything with a screen, thus, you could use an ipad, iphone, PC...etc, etc, not that they were making a console of sorts, but meh.
