The first part was awesome, but this was in development since half life 2 came out ;| I'm surprised aswel that valve didn't manage to force them to charge 20$ or so for it.

You're thinking of just Alien Swarm, the mod for UT2k4. This is the sequel to that.

That explains why they always make cheap, sometimes free games.
I never knew this.
They don't need to make hl3 yet, they'll use that in an emergency when the funds start dropping.

Steam://install/630 or Steam://Validate/630 (630 being the games "ID" or what to call it.) might work to acquire it a bit earlier, it's still not unlocked (It's not fully updated or how to describe it.) however so using it now will just bring up the store page.

so for people who have played this... what are the controls like? is this an arcadey' game that'd suit a gamepad, or do you need twitch aiming, so mouse is the only real choice
