Yes, it's the SSAO. It's as much curse as it is a blessing. While it can help in some cases, making a scene look better, it can make things look hilariously bad (as in your case). It is mostly due to the fact that it is not context sensitive - it is applied equally on the entire screen.
I usually have SSAO turned off. I find it to create very ugly artifacts. |

I dig SSAO, I find the glow a tolerable compromise in order to create that cinematic realism it tends to give. Used to play around with it in Crysis to improve the look of the stock game.

Wasn't that feature (Health regenerates automatically now.) shown in a earlier preview or discussion a while ago?
(Thus it shouldn't be surprising though then again the thread does move fast at times so some pages get a bit buried, heh.)
