They both have their ups and downs. I don't like nvidia's corporate douchery while ati acts like the little guys trying to make it but I like nvidias driver support hell and control panel a lot better.
As for the cards themselves, doesn't matter what card sucks, they always go back and forth. Nvidia used to be the king, then ati, then nvidia now it's ati. pretty soon nvidia will release something that'll take the throne from ati again.

No idea if my next card will be a ATI 6000 or NVIDIA GT5 or what they'll call those but driver wise both have had (And still have.) issues and both involve themselves with certain games and try to gain advantages via various means.
I prefer third party solutions when available though, current model is a ATI 4890 from Sapphire with Vapor-X technology and extra RAM, better components as well but they've tried to cut expenses on later models like the ATI 5000 series Vapor-X module so I don't know how they are now.
(Cooling is very similar to ATI's standard system but far quieter and it cools down much faster plus it's overclocked somewhat but not the quality of the top-end models so overclocking can't reach much higher than what is set already though there is some room.)
Other companies go extreme though like Asus taking two RV790 or what they're called (5870) GPU's and making a 5890 board with full clock speeds or even overclocked further plus high quality components and heavy cooling but premium priced and limited quantity though somehow it still sells.
(1000$ I think the price was, funny how Intel does the same when you can get a i7 930 or something and clock it to 4Ghz with a mid-end cooling solution and paste for less than half that, haha.)
Then there's upcoming stuff like a company that made a single slot GT470 via some experimental cooling solution or two GT470 GPU's at one board though I haven't heard much about those in a while.

My experience with drivers:
nVidia: Quite nice actually. SLI-support is better. Fast response on problems. Issues with stability at times (with certain drivers)
ATI: Single GPU - perfect drivers, never had any issues (I don't play BFBC2). Crossfire - crap. Different release schedule, regular monthly releases.
The main difference in my experience is that ATI drivers are perfect for single GPU systems while Crossfire systems always suffer. nV drivers have a much better track record for SLI setups. And that's really the only difference that matters between vendors as far as drivers are concerned.
Some people will mention "profiles" and stuff, but I never used the built-in stuff, I used 3rd party tools for that on both nV and ATI.
Suggestion: if you want close to flawless multil-GPU support, go nV. if you're not interested in multi-GPU gaming, go with best price/performance, where ATI had an edge. The 460 is apparently a good budget card but I haven't really checked it out. I still want a refreshed/updated 5870 (waiting for the fall releases before making a decision on what to get).

The sad thing is: the performance of that card isn't anything mind blowing... But if you have the money to spend

Oh how I long for the times when noone gave a shit what videocard you had, all that mattered was how many colours it supported, and which resolutions
On the other hand, back then soundcards were treated the way videocards are now

DirectX 7 doesn't currently work on nVidia cards, works with Ati cards though.
So you can still play Gothic II, Freelancer and other games on Ati, but not on nVidia.
This is currently the number one reason why nVidia sucks.

Whoa whoa whoa... hold the phone. DX7 doesn't work? No Freelancer on MY GTX460s? Fuck THAT then! Methinks I'll be sticking to a 5870 or something instead >_>

Not until the 260 driver version. They're currently at 258 whql and 259 development.

Not on games that use dithering. Thief II, Freelancer, Gothic etc.
