It happens to me too. As I am on 7, I just ctrl-alt-del and it fixes it for me.

1) apply patch to (\Steam\steamapps\common\mafia ii - public demo\pc\Mafia2.exe)
2) enjoy.
lot of ppl tested it, work fine.

If you want to do it by ur self:
NOP instruction FST DWORD PTR DS:[ESI+4C] ( D9 56 4C ) at 004F5F86.

Works perfectly, thanks.

By the way, it's always a pleasure to read your comments guys, and surprisingly seems that my old e6600 isn't something to make scrap iron out of it.

Well OBVIOUSLY! It injects an executable with different code! What did you expect? The man even posted the assembly change he did if you don't trust the download.

This thing is not optimised, at all. 100 FPS difference between minimum and maximum? AA hardly has any effect, both visually and performance-wise? And when I exit the game, it leaves my monitor brightness fucked up, i gotta reapply my resolution to get it fixed. Also notice how everyone pretty much gets 40-45 average, regardless of hardware and resolution? Smoothing in action right there.

Gonna give the game itself a try now, graphically it's not stunning and GTA4 looks better. I also dislike how the smoke effects and such are very minimal without NVIDIA hardware.

Guess with this one the gameplay, voice acting, music and story have to make up for a pretty aweful engine Smile

Edit: People calling this optimised need to get a grip. 100 FPS difference between minimum and maximum, with AA that really has no effect is not optimised. Clearly a lot of resources not being used properly.

Interesting... I am getting about 10 fps more on average (57) and maximum (125) with AA on at the same resolution and with 5870 at stock clocks...

Also Ctrl+Alt+Del for gamma fix...

And I think this looks better than the color-less grey/sepia world of GTA4. As for the handling, it feels quite accurate actually, as opposed to modern arcade racers that feel more like Wipeout than car handling. 50'ies cars with 50'ies tech didn't have tons of grip at high speed cornering etc, and American cars in the 50'ies were heavy as hell, hence the reason they're a little more difficult to control than the modern cars in GTA4.

I'm soooooooooo looking forward to Mafia 2 now. I'm really interested in getting into the story since that was the first Mafia's strongest point.

@ MinderMast: Yeah well, look at the other results here. Much lesser specced PC's get identical framerates, which only strengthens the fact that this is in fact a highly unoptimised engine.

Right so a bit more in-depth from me then:
Voice acting and music are awesome just like they were in Mafia 1. The driving is good, anyone who doesn't like it needs to drive an old car like these in real life. They didn't have great handling or brakes, they did have (for that time) great acceleration though. I also tried out all three cars, and all three actually handle exactly as they should. The first car is a decent allrounder - the 2nd car has the same power, but is a lot lighter, and as such is easier pushed off the road by the cops, it accelerates faster and turns a bit quicker. The third one has a lot less power and is really fucking heavy (1800 kg), and you feel that in the steering a lot.

Story-wise it seems to be on par with the old game as well, and the gameplay feels good. There's a cover system which is very similar to that in GTA4, and you really do need it, because you drop like a sack of shit if you stand in the open. Makes sense, since you're not wearing 7 layers of kevlar and shit like in GTA4 Wink

Now, for the downside. The engine is crap. It doesn't look better than GTA4, on par with it at best, although in my opinion GTA4 has slightly better textures and reflections. The world itself is more interesting in this because it's not as gritty as GTA4, shadows look fine in both, and both lack anti-aliasing, which is a goddamn shame. In the bench my system tops out at 100+ FPS, in-game I stay at a capped 60 FPS most of the time (VSync), with incredible drops at some points. Part of that is probably because I'm running on a stock E8400, but nevertheless, the game should be running flawless for the graphics it has. They apply a lot of blurring when you turn their so-called AA option on, so I really recommend playing without it because it doesn't make the game look better. It doesn't cost me any performance though.

I'm gonna put APEX/PhysX on medium, see if that has any impact. So far, the game itself seems just as good as the old one, it's just a shame about the engine.

It became a bad thing when games started using it as their sole gameplay option, replete with 360 degree "chameleon vision". A cover system is a great addition to a game, if it's done right and not just because it's the only way the derp console controller can cope with fast-paced shooting.

I miss the days of the TRUE cover system, where you were in FP and had to lean round corners to see, without the aid of god-vision ... and by doing so you did actually leave yourself open to being shot.

Yes, and more, if you dont trust my patch enough you can always do it by ur self.

download any HEX editor, winhex for exmpl.

1) go to 000F5380, look for D9 56 4C, and change it to 90 90 90.
2) save file and play without timer.

Hit ctrl+alt+del (if you're on V/7) and then press cancel, everything should return to normal.
