Not that much is known yet, even the IMDB page is for Pro accounts only, but Karl Urban has been confirmed to play Dredd.
Quote: | Karl Urban has been confirmed for the leading role in Judge Dredd by producers Andrew Macdonald and Allon Reich of the new film. Urban had been rumoured for the role already, but in a Movie-Con Q&A this evening the pair confirmed that he has been cast for the film, shooting in South Africa soon.
“The main thing about Dredd is that it’s a fantastic comic that was completely messed up 20 years ago," said Macdonald. "Our idea is to make a very hard, R-rated, gritty, realistic movie of Dredd in Megacity, so we’ve got to get the tone right. He’s not going to take off his helmet. His bike is going to feel real. He’s going to hit people and it’s going to feel real."
"There’s been a change in comic-book movies; they were treated unseriously and now they’re treated seriously. We’ve cast a guy called Karl Urban to play Dredd. We’ll be shooting in Johannesburg, it’s being directed by Pete Travis, we’re shooting with the people who did District 9 – and if we get it right, Alex has a couple of ideas for other stories as well. It’s not based on any one comic, and John Wagner is involved in every decision." |

To be edited down after focus groups to a PG version with lots of "pows" and "bams"

what ruined judge dredd for me was fucking rob schneider. that, and the kinda upbeat nature of the movie at times. but mostly fucking rob schneider. this movie will instantly be provably better than the first one as long as they DONT HAVE ROB FUCKING SCHNEIDER IN IT.

What ruined Judge Dredd for me was the entire movie that somehow missed who Judge Dredd was, sexual tension between Dredd and his female colleague, using bits of several original stories etc... The only thing that was actually good in that movie was Megacity which was very well made and realised.

the other good thing was that abc robot or whatever it was. man that thing freaked me out when i was younger - utterly badass robot design and realized pretty damn well in the movie... *shudders*

But the ABC-warriors stuff from 2000AD wasn't really Dredd material, was it?

It's now in post production and the title is simply Dredd (hint to Inz)
Oh, out of all the irony, it's EXACTLY 1 year till it premieres: Quote: | Release Date:
21 September 2012 (Sweden) |

well i was really looking forward to this, but uh-ohhh...
studio meddling...
Quote: | When a director gets locked out of his own editing room, it's never a good sign. While they usually have full control of the movie they are making, if producers feel the need to remove them from any part of the production, chances are that it means they have done more harm than good. In the case of Dredd, however, it may actually be even worse than normal.
The Los Angeles Times is reporting that not only has director Pete Travis been asked to keep away from the post-production process on the new comic book movie, but unnamed sources are saying that writer/producer Alex Garland has taken over and may even go as far as to seek a co-director credit. While the decision to go after the title has not yet been made, it's worth noting that Garland did not shoot any of the movie. The project may be heading to reshoots, but it's unknown who would be manning the camera. Apparently the conflict began while the movie was still in production, when "producers and executives in charge of the production did not see eye-to-eye on footage Travis was delivering." The film is currently scheduled to be released on September 21, 2012.

question is, was he kicked out because he was fucking it sideways, or is this another example of the producers think he wasnt making it mainstream and appealing enough to the widest audience possible
that is, IF this is true... well, we'll just have to wait n see...

I'm not a fan of Pete Travis but I'm looking forward to this reboot/remake. The poster seems to be very "serious" ..we'll see!

I hope he takes his helmet off in the new film, just so I can laugh at the fanboy rage.

Ah GOOD CHRIST we need another re-do? So Mid-90s is not soon enough then we'll have only 10 years between a full re-do? HOLLYWOOD.. Passhhh..
And yeah I actually liked the '95 Judge Dread.. was.. entertained even though it had some 'campy' scenes but pah.. was fun.

Dredd took his helmet off quite often in the 200AD comics, you just didn't see his face until the Wars, where you saw his scarred face.

That's just it though, the fanboys went nuts over Dredd taking off his helmet in JD-1995 when they really should have been nuts about the face thing instead. I remember reading once that the JD creator himself set the rule about not showing Dredd's face, it was supposed to be the symbolism of the faceless nature of the Law. Take off his helmet, fine, but don't show his face.

Schneider I like, his retard friend Sandler I hate. And apologies to the mentally retarded people who are offended to be put in the same category as Sandler.
