Well - it's not as if it's the first time they use the x-com brand on something else than a turnbased strategy game.

Yes, Interceptor and Enforcer. But the X-COM story was still there, even though Enforcer was dreadful.

Instead of whining - wait and see. Who knows, it might turn out to be good. And should it be shit - just don't play it. We can't stop them from making a game using this brand anyway so being upset and whining is just a waste of time imo Smile

And people are whining where? Confused

It's not a question if will be good or not, it's the point of using a 20 years old IP that means nothing to today's generation just to appeal to the nostalgia of older gamers. The problem is why trying to appeal older gamers and then change the background of the game? It would be easier to call it something else.

It's not the concept isn't there (mission based, possibility to retreat from a mission whenever a player wants, base-driven research and team control), what really defines X-COM isn't.

Mate...i've been a gamer since before c64 was released. I've spent atleast 5-20h/day since end of the 70's doing different kind of gaming. Im a hardcore xcom fan and have all xcom games both on original cd/dvd and on steam...but still I don't really get bothered when they try to do something new with the xcom series. And your the one who whine cos this game isnt what you want Smile

Edit: Sorry, whine isnt the right word..I mean your making a chicken out of a feather. If you get that one that is.

Hey I remember Apple II's in high school.I also remember the quest games where you had to type things like "get shovel" or "use shovel" rather then use some animated action to pick it up an use it.I guess I am ancient but I think those of us that have been around gaming that long are actually blessed. We saw the beginnings, the best of what has come.Actual physical manuals in a game box that could be considered not just a game manual on how to play the game but contained history and reference as well that we could lay back and relax and read.Something that game developers pinch pennies on today and don't even include except for a worthless pdf file.Sad....Sad...

And lets not forget boxed war games from Avalon Hill,West End Games,SPI,and the like which I still cherish. There is a lot more to good gaming then just computers. Very Happy

Hahahaha, just checked the trailer for the new "X-com" game. Damn what a joke. It's an abomination. It's pure FAIL!!!! It looks like a b-shooter from 2002, one of those shooters that nobody remembers or cared about (like Chrome or similar).

It seems to me like some developer worked on a 50'ies alien themed shooter game which the publisher thought would sell shed-loads of if they slapped the X-com label on it for pure marketing purposes.

Pure FAIL!!!!!

I belive that the single difference between the old X-Com's and this one, is that in this one you don't play as the X-Com chief commander, but as someone lower in the chain of command instead. (I.E, it looks like you don't order UFO interception, you don't control when something gets produced or not... don't control base building...).

Just hope that taking pictures off of dead alien bodies doesn't replace actually stunning and recovering them.

To be fair Apoc was pretty damn good, even if I didn't find it as good as the first one it still stayed trough to the original formula but added some other cool features. However interceptor and enforcer, well nothing good at all to say about those.

I really like Interceptor. I would like it even more if there was an option of NOT going on a mission (only your soldiers in their spaceships, you stay out).

Apocalypse was very good actually, even without some of the extended features they wanted it to have (like capturing and interrogating crimnals for instance, not only aliens) and a lot of equipment that never made it to final.

and there are all in the CD.
if you can browse inside the pictures of the game folder, you will notice many piece of equipment new and very cool, like a compact-handgun-missile launcher (not the marsec one) a kinda laser rifle, the detention cells you mentioned for criminals/mindsucked enemies (my guess) and the advanced bio-contaiment unit ( 4 slot contaiment units, with plasma/energy turret for support)

dont saw it around (or im blind, meh), check this site out: http://www.xenonauts.com/index.php
its a new game based on the real xcom, worth the waiting to get done, instead to play that shit 2K will give us. Smile

http://kotaku.com/5613458/what-came-first-the-xcom-or-the-game

For me that shows it's done. XCom has kicked the bucket :/

Quote:
It's not an answer that will satisfy angry old-time fans hoping for a more literal update, but in the long run, I think that may work in the game's favour. The demo I saw - which is the same one Brian saw at E3 - doesn't feel like an XCOM game, not one tiny bit.

I didn't sit there noticing homages to the old games, or areas where I could see a direct lineage. This is a completely new game and a completely new experience for the series, one so new and removed from what we associate with the franchise that I think most people will quickly forget it's called "XCOM" at all and will appreciate (or despise, if that's your thing) it for what it is, not what came before it.
