I used to be addicted to this forum, now my life has become a lot more demanding of my time, in a good way. I still browse it very occasionally, and this weekend my plans have fallen through because of the weather, so I'm bored and even decided to post ZOMG!
Do you think this forum is a substitute for something missing in your life? For me it provided social interaction, which I did not get very often because I was either stuck in the lab or playing computer games. Now my life provides the social contact I need, because I have a long term girlfriend I often go to social occasions with, and the demanding part of my (self-employed) genotyping contract is over, since I just have to wait for a virus to incubate in rats for a few months. So I have free time in the week, which I have used to make a successful effort to reconnect with friends.
Not saying it's a bad thing necessarily, and I do love this forum in a way since it has such a diverse range of characters, some of which I have come to know very well. I almost feel like some of the regulars are friends oddly enough. But I do think I used it vicariously in place of real socialising, which stopped me from actually getting out there and making an effort.

I believe that if we're all going down in a giant virus outbreak it's gonna be AM's fault.
But anyway. I guess for some it could be a substitution for other things but I don't think it applies for the general population of this board.
You could be right or you could be blatantly overanalyzing. So: meh to that.

Welcome back.
Could you release a virus that suddenly decreases the heavy addiction to this forum without any collateral damage such as having a social life and/or a girlfriend?

@AnimalMother
played Prototype?
But what do you expect?
I can only speak for myself here but.
Depression? Sure, the world shows me no quarter and my life ain't going anywhere in the direction I want it to.
Apathy? Indeed. The world is going down fast and nobody cares, so why should I?
Anger? Do I like the fact that my life is going nowhere at almost the speed of light? Or that the world is going to shits and nobody (inacluding myself) really cares? Hellz no.
I combine these three things and that's not because I have no friends and social interactions. I got both. Maybe not the type or amount I'd like but that's another story.
So let's say meh *shrugs shoulders* to that.

Hi, AnimalMother!
Welcome back. Remember about that scientific epiphany you had, seeing the world in another light? I had one of myself, too. No wonder you study biology - it's the most beautiful and elegant science there is. I regret not choosing it myself, currently studying osteo/paleoanthropology.
How's life?

Meh it's all just applied physics j/k (not! )
Anywho wb AM
I have to agree it's a lot easier to argue on forum and talk and whatnot than actually be around ppl.
It's a lot easier to just click the X button if you don't want to agree with someone or you do not want to converse with.
Forum is kind of a exhaust valve. And it can be pretty addictive :\
Especially for someone who hates meeting new ppl (like me ). I like the safety of ppl I know and there are some benefits to that, but also I find that it's limiting, because I prolly don't have many 'introductory social skills'...

Could you elaborate on the epiphany you experienced? In PM if you would prefer.
In terms of awareness I have gone far beyond the original epiphany, I now feel that was just a stepping stone to a far deeper understanding of reality as a whole.
I believe that biology is the most relevant scientific discipline, since the confines of human physiology and consciousness are the greatest limit to our capacity for true advancement. We should first focus on overcoming the self-destructiveness of human nature, before we attempt to control the fundaments of the universe.
Life is pretty good for me at the moment, but only because I've put great effort into steering it where I want to go.

i don't get this idea, you can't remove the ability for people to do damage any more than you can stop people breathing. unless you mean helping suicidal people and what-not.

I'm not talking about the physical capacity for damage, I'm talking about the way humanity as a whole seems to be in conflict with itself. But seriously, I'm not talking practically, but hypothetically about some point in the future when humans as a whole have become more enlightened. Which I believe will require transhuman technology at least.

Ah Firemaster, I would expect no less from your belligerent self. I suppose for you, the concept of having any kind of long term relationship with someone just doesn't exist. Enjoy living and dying alone, don't worry with your habits it'll all be over soon. You won't be missed by anyone.

Back to Am's first post I have to agree, I find a lot of apathy, depression and anger as well. I think it is because it is easier to bitch on forums because people are not in your face. Plus it is therapeutic to write stuff down. |
I agree with you, this site was kind of like an interactive journal at times. I'm on here way less now too mostly because of school, work, gf, etc. but it was nice to be able to bitch about something and have a bunch of people respond to it.
It's weird to see regulars disappear from here.

Well, I would have left more people in tears without the need to be cried upon.
Also, if you ever make the stupid idea of getting married, enjoy having 50% of everything you worked hard to get taken out of you a few years later.

I agree that marriage is a stupid idea. I don't expect it to last forever, but it's enjoyable for now.

I was a mod on a board where we had a very nice co-admin. Suddenly he stopped posting and the admin called his family and they didn't know where he was either... He was studying medicine (I think he might have even finished it).
Rumors say he committed suicide :/

I lost 2 people I knew back during my college years because they committed suicide.
