It's because 2D gfx age much better than 3D.

Also gritty and dark artistic style ages much better than kiddy WoW gfx, geared for an MMO (so it performs good)

I feel exactly the opposite. Wow graphics work very well for an mmo. Sure it looks slightly dated, even with constant graphical updates. If they update the polygon count and replace all the low res textures, like they said they wanted to in the near future, it will look proper again.

But if you can't play wow 'cause of the graphics, maybe it's just not for you.

WoW looks like crap no matter how many colours they splash onto everything. Models, textures, it's all low poly low res and looks dated as hell. WoW is mainly a game where graphics must be tolerated, and is tolerated if you're addicted to it. But it still looks like crap.

It's because 2D gfx age much better than 3D.

Also, 2D graphics were at their peak when Diablo 2 was released, and most other games at that time were released with uber-crappy 3D, which was just taking of back then.

2D hasn't done that much improvement since D2 was released, maybe D2 could need higher resultions etc, but it's still pretty great looking, whereas 3D got many many improvements since WoW was released and of course it looks dated now.

I also still remember me wowing at the WoW graphics during the beta, but 5 years is a long time in 3D land.

WoW could look absolutely amazing. I know a guy who works at crytek in frankfurt as 3d artist and he recreated this tuskarr model from wow into cryengine (cryengine 2).

Model:

(If I remember correctly he did some of the animal models from crysis Laughing)

From the article -

Diablo III's health system is designed to keep you thinking on your feet and rushing toward the next fight......That's where health globes -- floating, crimson spheres that rise from the corpses of your defeated foes -- come in. These globes are the core means of regenerating your health in Diablo III, and all other methods of healing support them. When you pick up a health globe, your health (and the health of any allies in your party) is restored by a fixed percentage depending on the type of globe you've grabbed.

I'd much prefer D2's system of potions mixed with %life-steal gear. The more I read about D3 the less excited I get.

I feel I should mention this kind of health system has existed before mainstream consoles and works fine. It's not regenerative health for one you can't just sit around and heal your wounds you need to push forward. I'm not a console gamer and I see nothing wrong here health pots are just another annoyance in my quest to smash things into paste. It's Diablo FFS there isn't much to it.

Not to mention there was no downtime whatsoever in Diablo 2 with health potions being so cheap as soon as you got past the first 10-20 levels you had a full belt after every trip to town with no money problems.

Health pots are a worse system for PvP(if there'll be any pvp and/or health pots in Diablo 3 I don't know).

It's not necessarily a bad system imo. Maybe not ideal, but if you're low on health it seems better to regain it by doing another fight and managing to take very little damage; than to pop a couple of the potions that you carry a backpack's worth of at all times. In general I don't like when a game makes you dependant on health potions/first aid kits and the like.

Nah I don't mind inventory management at all, it just seems a bit aged in terms of game mechanics and silly in terms of RP to drink from a little bottle every few seconds while fighting. It's similar in games where you depend on picking up health packs every 50 yards - in rough terms a game should either make getting injured mean something or just give the player powerful tools to avoid getting injured. Having him take a beating all the time and then coming up with a contrived way of repeatedly handling the injuries just seems redundant.

Of course, like I said earlier getting orbs from fallen enemies may not be an optimal way to handle this either, but at least it ties the net healing to the performance in combat, and absorbing the energy from your foes seems fairly viable in RP terms too. On top of that, it reduces your in-game dependance on external (purchased) resources, allowing you to get by with what you can extract from your opponents; which seems quite adventurer-like.

It also leaves room for working healing into encounters, like if you fight a very powerful boss, instead of bringing 50 health potions to drink, you might have to kill some minor enemies for healing during the encounter.. or better still, it may be balanced around not getting hit that much and not needing to heal.

Personally, I LIKE the idea of healing by fighting. It gives more incentive to plough right in, weapons swinging -- and it adds just that little bit of tension to the game too! You're down to 5/120hp, you have to charge in and hope to god that your first kill drops some needed health orbs! It sounds great Very Happy

An (almost) identical system is used in Untold Legends on the PS3. There's no health potions at all, you regain health from shrines/save points and from combat.. and it's hella lots of tense knowing you have a tiny amount of HP left and you desperately want some health orbs to drop off your next kill Laughing

Agree with this as well, single player is where the immersion is. Multiplayer was ok in D1 since it was all so new (to me at least), but with D2 the novelty had worn off and battlenet just felt like a grind. Single player was the most fun I had with that game really.
