Finished the game, liked it a lot. Great graphics, music, great characters, story and atmosphere. Also, very well optimized. A bit sad that there weren't more things to do, though. Feels like there's a lot wasted potential in this game, despite it being really, really good anyways. Can't get those low review scores really. It's like I've been playing a different game. Or perhaps they were expecting a different game. Dunno...

Dunno if i would use the word "optimized" considering the massive memory leak . Also games dont get high gameplay scores on potential. I will concede the graphics and audio though.

JBeckman wrote: | Memory leak could be related to Skidrows crack, various people have said that it has issues, I haven't compared it to the original however (Partially for the extra DLC support and mod compatibility it brings.) and the game doesn't slow down or anything here.
(That console app I use as shown on the previous page with mod scripts does make things a bit unstable however and it can't work very well at all with the original exe as CEG protection is used and will shut the game down if it's "compromised" in any way, same for trainers and such though originally meant to prevent debugging and cracking it.)
EDIT: On the game itself I just noticed that different clothing stores sell different colors of those four or so base clothes available, there's also a larger store in midtown that offers black themed clothing for several of the outfits.
(Though I prefer the stylish DLC outfits over those but the classic gangster style with coat and all can be classy as well.)
EDIT: Also Vito sometimes do funny grimaces.
(Though I don't know why, kinda reminds me of that "Derp" thread pictures a bit.) |
I have completed the game with the Skidrow proper crack (never tried any other) on the Skidrow Image, and I have had smooth sailing all the way on my almost 3 years old Pc.
I had one crash and that happened the second or third time I visited The Maltese Falcon.
Oh, and I noticed a minor glitch. I can play smoothly enough with physx on Medium (WAY better performance than the demo) but now and then, Physx effects get's turned off, not that the menu says it's disabled, but sometimes I noticed that I didn't get all the extra FX, the funny things is, that if I enable PhysX on High, it never gets turned off, but then there is so much debris that I get bad performance.
Otherwise I didn't notice Anything like a memory leak, I'm actually surprised how fast this game runs.

True performance is often excellent and what you say about PhysX seems to be a general bug or glitch as people who own the game have also confirmed the same behavior along with how it sometimes switches over from not being GPU accelerated (NVIDIA users.) and instead goes over to the CPU (They might still be on .223 and not the latest .224 NVIDIA PhysX drivers though.), some effects will be CPU related anyhow like ragdoll animations but it's rather noticeable with clothing as it's there all the time via pedestrians though normally it is a rather light effect, medium and high mainly differs in that medium has 3000 particles available and high uses up to 10000 mostly smoke and larger explosions.
(Gas station or truck or if you start spraying with the tommygun I'd imagine, car smoke can be difficult to do in some situations but reversing with a faster vehicle or pushing a heavy vehicle around will usually show the effect, rather nifty and actually quite optimized as well, even works on CPU mode if you don't overdo the wheel spin thing or what to call it.)
(In comparison all those skirts and coats flailing around can really hit performance, probably why some people notice better performance during the night time conditions though there's not many in the game.)

Forgot to mention that I have tweaked PhysX cloth so it's only Vito's clothes that is on.
Specs: Q6600 2.4 Ghz, GF8800GTS(G92) 512 Vram, 2 Gb DDR2 ram on Win XP pro 32 bit, No wonder why I'm overjoyed with the performance And btw. PhysX on medium looks really fine in firefights (Highlight for me, must be the skyscraper Shootout I loved blasting those thick glass bricks), good enough for me at least

Was the dynamic car damage also supposed to be included in a separate DLC?

It is used on some vehicles already apparently but this enables it on everything aside from taxis and police cars, somewhat buggy however it would seem based on those comments.
(Perhaps incomplete and might be why most cars use a pre-defined damage point such as crashing the front left side or so on.)

So 2k want to push the DLC to the extreme. In the next Mafia we'll only have the even chapters: 2 , 4 , 6 , 8 ... available to play in the full game.
the odd ones will appear in the form of DLC's.

Well from a purely technical standpoint, the PS3 version of FFXIII shits on the 360 version. And that is coming from a MEGA 360 lover, MEGA Sony hater, like myself.

He sent link to a petition and then someone replied with question whether there's something funny about the petition as Daniel has added smileys to the link. Then Daniel replied:
It's not a bad idea, but it's not up to me [to make decisions]. I don't joke about that petition.
He doesn't say anything about him wanting Mafia 2 to be released in its proper form.

Ok, so I finished the game just now. And while I do *not* think it's a bad game, I do not feel like it deserves a 9, much less a 10.
It relies heavily on it's story, a story which brings nothing new to the table of storytelling - in fact, it's been seen in various forms across movies and a few games before. They mixed in some small twists and turns here and there, but especially the introduction (the family that immigrates to America, ends up in the slums/poorer area, dad drinks, money is scarce etc) is somewhat of a lazy way to show how Vito ended up as a criminal. The story holds up pretty good all throughout the game though, voice actors do a decent job, though some conversation scripts seem a bit rushed.
Technically, the game is also not bad at all - it looks good and it sounds good. But animation and general "flow" of the characters moves feels somewhat dated at times. And, while the game looks good (textures, lightning/reflections, model details etc), the city is a bit "uneven" when it comes to general detail. In some places, it feels detailed enough for it to look and feel believable, and other places feel kinda empty and lifeless.
Gameplay wise I also think it's not as good as it can be - like GTA IV, it has a cover system that sometimes is the reason you're killed. And, the game does very little to vary the things you do, or keep them interesting throughout the game. Especially this A to B-driving, which you do constantly - which in like 8 out of 10 times ends in a firefight. And those aren't exactly varied either, but there are some of the later ones in the game that are more fun than others. Same thing with the fighting really - the first half or so of the game is overdone with fighting sequences. This would be fine if the game had a great fighting system, but it's too simple to be fun after 10 fights. All you have to do is dodge a punch (and it's impossible to fail at it, since you only hold a button) and then immediately counter with another button.
It took me almost exactly 10 hours to complete the game, and I really think that is too short for a full priced game today, especially (as I've mentioned before) that's how long both DLCs are for GTA IV. Sure, if they had kept up the same gameplay as they did throughout the whole game, then it would've gone borderline boring, so maybe it was for the games' own good. But with a more fleshed out story and added variety (or atleast spiced up) gameplay, they could've made it atleast 5 hours longer.
The story is as mentioned decent, and does what it's supposed to do, but it doesn't feel very deep, or fleshed out enough. Almost rushed - there isn't that much character development, and I don't think 2K has done enough to make us really care about the characters - this is especially notable in the ending.
Spoiler: | First off, it was ridiculous how quick the ending scene was over - they left the planetarium, Vito saw Joe's car make a right, and that was it. Seriously, it lacked so much emotion, emotion it could've had And we are supposed to feel sad that Joe is "dead" now.. ? It didn't have such a big impact at all since it was over so quickly, and that all the characters almost didn't have any emotions whatsoever. |
So, I can summarize this by saying it's a decent game that lacks substance, and that feels rushed and shallow in many places.
So for me, it's barely a 7/10
