Due to a strange turn of events I learned that my old 4:3 CRT monitor accepts and displays 1080p @ 71.928 (3 * 24p).
But those strange events that made that possible were suddenly forgotten one day. By my PC that is. Now it's sure that its out of the specification of my monitor and it couldn't possible display that... yeah right. The week I used that resolution must have been dream.
I have Win 7 x64 with an ATI 4890 and PowerStrip.
PowerStrip won't let me use that resolution either. I added 1920x1080@72Hz as a custom resolution but that will only blacken the screen. If I didn't have a AVR hooked to the PC I had a problem. Because for some reason my PC wants to use a different resolution and refreshrate when the AVR is off. Kind of a safety switch to me now
Yes i know, that i'll get black bars. i love watching 4:3 material with black bars all over the place and its just like assasins creed
you can accurately create and test custom display modes with powerstrip
i used PS to stretch my old CRT way past it's specs to a bearable refresh rate, until i threw it to a shitpile and got flats
i think you have to do some extra fiddling to get it to work properly on a w7 due to driver signing and shit, but i'm not sure
I am using powerstrip but it only lets me add custom resolutions. Testing them results in a black screen and thats it.
Not sure what i am doing wrong.
are you sensitive to crt flicker?
I noticed lately that with the extremely low contrast (non-blinding in a dark room) not even 60Hz disturb me to muchi and in videos not at all
well, i wouldn't use any monitor below 80hz for more than a few hours
the flicker isn't noticeable but the eyes are tired nonetheless
atleast on xp you could use powerstrip to adjust the values manually on the fly and immediately see the effects, so you could really test it's limits
since i'm using lcds now i have no use for it and haven't tried how it works with w7x64
I've got no problem with the refreshrate actually. That still works as you describe. Resolution doesn't work at all, but as I said, the monitor can handle it.
