Whether it's 'worth' buying or not depends on how you feel about the game. If you've been anticipating it's release and perhaps enjoyed some sub games from the past you'll find yourself falling in love with SHIII. If you didn't like the arcade game Enigma Rising Tide, or you couldn't stomach Silent Hunter 2 then you'll probably want to give it's sequel a miss as well.

Liked Das Boot, or any submarine production? You'll likely find a friend in SHIII.

It's not without it's faults - like all games - and it will need another one or perhaps two patches (depending on how many fixes they distribute in 1.2). I've experienced one crash in my playing time - I was surfacing the boat, but just as my men were taking to the watchtowers automatically I clicked a reshuffle of the boats crew which seemed to confuse the game and cause it to lockup and crash out. Thankfully however you can save the game midway as often as you want so if you do encounter anything like this it's not a huge catastrophe. I personally haven't encountered any other major problem - though I've not tried MP as of yet.

The dynamic campaign is basic I agree, it relies too much on the fundementals of the game to provide entertainment. It would of been nice to have seen this expanded much more but I cannot stress enough that as basic as what we have here is - it's still the best submarine simulator on the market and it's still one hell of a ride believe me.

I could critique this game to death here but it will only project the wrong kind of image of the game. I am completely enthralled by what I've bought and I'm enjoying every minute. There are some things I would like changed, added and tweaked - but that discussion is best left between other gamers who have and appreciate the game.

Those who don't will be skeptical - trust me I was too when I heard and read the things being said on www.subsim.com - but when I finally got the game installed and got to grips with what was on offer I can't get away from it.

80% seems a very unfair score to give SHIII - it would appear that the standards criteria takes a huge leap when it concerns niche games such as this - whereas in the case of Band of Brothers, Half Life 2, Doom III etc the scores suddenly leap into their ninetys on name alone.

This game will not jump out and bite you on the 'ass. Your going to have to work at it for a bit until you settle in. Only the graphics will instantly appeal. I played it's predecessor a lot and it has many things the same & similar but it still took me about an hour to just get in tune with what this game was all about. 'Playing it a bit' will get you nothing. You have to really experience it to enjoy it. That happens over time.

My first two patrols ended in NOTHING. That's not exciting or appreciable for most people - despite it's inherent realism. Things get better but you probably won't enjoy the game the way your talking. There's a lot of depth to this game and a lot of ways to play it. But you have to want to play it, otherwise it's not going to be for you - you'll get bored, or impatient. I wanted to enjoy SHIII and the games before it because I enjoy submarine productions... whether it's film, literature or video games.

Need a bloody demo i think all games should come with demos , they dont like people pirating games yet some people need piracy to be able to test the games properly!!

But a game like this without a demo there isnt a chance in hell id buy it
but why do the devs care what i think

Nothing to do with the developers, it's the publisher UBI-Soft. they did the same with Brothers in Arms. A demo is supposedly coming out after release but I wouldn't hold my breath.

Buy it from Amazon and return it if you don't like it - I've done that before with TOCA Race Driver 2. They didn't care.

u r right...
the three last titles that u mentioned are only hype games and no1 of them deserve the high rankings...

half life2(not what i expected) and doom3(after 2 hours boring like HELL Wink ) was imo a great disapointment
brother in arms was good, but when i finished it, i noticed there was only 1 taktik in this game (fire on opponent and flank him then) needed for the hole game... imo poor for such a "big" game.

anyway there where some games that i really enjoyed and 2 of them i never forget (second sight on ps2 and soldiers of world war2)
both games comes from nowhere.
and i only know about second sight that i was developed by the timesplitters makers. these 2 a really gems and deserved my money Smile

I don't think theres any reason to start that... The point regarding Half Life 2 is valid, and in turn Doom III - they effectively got high ratings like the movies you allude to simply on the basis of the high profile and hype they generate.

I'm all for popcorn munching madness, and I enjoyed Half Life and to a much lesser extent Doom III, but at the end of the day neither games were really that good and certainly didn't deserve all the praise that got lavished upon them. Like the high profile popcorn movies - they are pure entertainment with little on the side. Yet here is a game with the same amount of, if not more entertainment but because it's presented in a less than familiar enviroment, and with much different dynamics - it fails to achieve those high scores - especially funny considering it's the best Submarine simulator out there. bar none.

They have the audacity to give Half Life 2 and Doom III similar scores in such a crowded arena when neither game advanced the genre one iota. Not one bit. But suddenly the goalposts shift for Silent Hunter III, or games like it for that matter which do make strides, that attempt something different (and note: succeed - this is now a game, not a labarous affair. It's very easy to control and get involved. It only requires effort on part of the persons mentality to enjoy it).

Anyway magazines, and reviews mean squat - what you want is popular opinion.

I for example don't speak for everyone, I only speak for pedantic, hard to please gamers such as myself. But I think I make the odd valid point for everyone. And reading forum opinions gives a greater wealth of information than any review as you get opinions from every category.

I've not really heard anything severly bad about SHIII from anyone who's played it (beyond bugs, crashes etc - and in these cases you will always find they back it up with - but hey the game is great! kind of thing).

You know what would be worse? Searching around for a store for the next couple of days only to realise if you had sent off for an order online already you'd have the game lol.

Time to bite the bullet? Your going to need some patience when you start the game you know! Very Happy

Well I was out on another patrol (I'm really hoping I get a different type of mission sometime...this is my 8th patrol in a row), and it seems the AI decided to shut off. I was travelling through the English Channel and every warship I came across was just sitting in the water not moving...I could approach them and destroy them and they never even budged an inch.

I just started the next patrol after this and guess what...the AI is still dead, the ships are spotted, I approach them, and they are just idling in the water, not moving, not caring that im surfaced and floating right passed them.

I'm really starting to see why this dynamic campaign is so great =)

But 349 NOK is about the same as 399 SEK I think... Rolling Eyes

100 NZ Dollars = £38 GBP
349 NOK = £29 GBP
399 SEK = £30 GBP

The best part of all this is that I only spent £17 GBP by pre-ordering from Play.com - they do deliveries to Sweden and Norway too - only they don't do New Zealand it seems.

I think I got the better deal Very Happy

wow you really don't like the campaign mode do you? Obviously you've encountered a bug - it's not one I've come across but in a game like this it's probably not uncommon for these things to surface from time to time. Perhaps you should report it & give them details?

As for the campaign itself - what more do you want?

Ordering from play.com, that seems to be the best advise ever given to me!
Here in the Netherlands the newest games cost about € 45,- to € 50,- (thats about 59 to 66 US dollar, or 31 to 35 GBP). On play.com there are no shipping costs added so I think its free shipping inside the EU. That is just great value!
I think that the best strategy to counter piracy is to make videogames just as 'cheap' as this!
