Hypocrites! With one hand they give away money for charities, with the other they break marriages and addict millions!

Old transports had some measure of defenses, but now that's no more, and you actually have to escort your invasion fleet no matter the foe.
It's also conducive with the new no-stacking rule. Pre-Civ5 transports depended on stacking given a single boat could transport several units. This couldn't work in Civ5 without bending the rules: why would you suddenly be able to cram four infantry units into the single hex the hypothetical standard transport would take?
Both factors, I think, combine to make troop transport more interesting. You used to be able to stack your entire fleet AND transports in a single square with no problems whatsoever, but now you'll have to use several warships to effectively protect what could be 10+ hexes of fragile transports. | This reminded me of a question that was finally answered in the manual. How many air units can a flat top carry? Three apparently.
Also, the manual has this to say about embarking: Civ5 Manual wrote: | At the start of the game, your land units cannot enter any water
tiles. However, once you’ve learned the Optics technology,
a unit can earn the promotion that allows it to “embark” and
move into coastal water tiles. To embark a unit, move the unit
to a coastal tile and then click on the “Embark” Action. Once
embarked, the unit must move into water. (Optics allows movement
into coastal water only. The later Astronomy tech allows
embarked units to enter ocean tiles.)
In the water the embarked unit is very slow and helpless. It is
totally unable to fight, and any enemy naval vessel can easily
destroy it. It’s critical to accompany embarked land units with a strong naval defense.
When the unit is adjacent to a land tile, you can click on the “Disembark” action. The unit will
then be able to return to dry land. Alternatively you can right-click on a land tile and the unit
will disembark automatically. |

Ah, that's right. I guess the rule-bending is inevitable in that case, since making a carrier for every air unit would be terrible. And needless to say, it'd be worse to allow aircraft to transform into carriers.

Listing Embarkation under promotions seems confusing if it's actually a status, unless it's truly a promotion and those civilian units I mentioned earlier already start with said ability. They wouldn't be able to obtain it otherwise, as they presumably can't earn XP because they can't engage in combat. But I guess military units will have to earn the promotion... I guess stuff is just poorly worded around that concept.
I could've sworn Samurai in Gamespot's live feed jumped into the water very soon after being produced, without any special promotion requirements.

There must be a typo or something is not explained propperly. No way to transport Settlers would make Archipelago maps virtually unplayable and I really doubt they'd do something like that.

Samurai are a pretty late age unit, so they probably already researched Optics which gives you the embarkation ability. You get Optics in the Classical Era so it's somewhat early in the game.
I think the Embarkation as a promotion must be a manual typo or something as you said.

First game I ever played was simcity on some air force guy's computer. He gave me some 5.0 floppys w/ the game on it.
After that a friend of mine (his dad was also air force - in the deep south in the 90's that was the only hope of encountering people that knew what was going on as far as computers went) gave me the first civ for my 10th birthday, pirated on some 3.5s. We spent days on the game.
Jizzy crizzy this takes me back.
If they can eliminate some of the micromanagement (by employing competent AI) and still make it challenging... they will have succeeded in making a better civ than civ 4.
Otherwise they will have simply converted Civ to hex squares, and with menus big enough for console junkies. Yay fucking hippee.

Funny, I started my whole pc gaming experience off with Civ as well. Was handed a crate of 3.5 floppies by my uncle(ship captain/former hells angel) who also got into computers about the same time, and well, civ was one of the gems of the bunch. I remember the late night hours of being huddled up in front of the ol packard bell with a longass game of germany vs the world were some of the only chances I got to hang out with him before he had to leave the country-in a rush. Haha, memories of civ - gotta love em.
But yeah, got this game preloaded - deluxe ver from d2drive - and READY.
ONE MORE TURN....
