The demo has only the two easiest difficulties. The full game promises to have "Hard" and "Gothic" and will likely be the type of hardcore RPG challenge you want. It's a demo for christ's sake.

You can change the diff to hard in the demo during the game (not at the start). At least so it seems, didn't try it yet.

Just a little question, how about the performance? Are the system requirements as insanely high as it was said some weeks ago? Smile

(I'm too busy atm, so I can't try the demo Crying or Very sad )

Here's a few comments:

plays and looks like Risen, actually looks bit better especially character models, runs fine on my mid-spec system (e8500@3.8Ghz, 4870, 4Gb, win7 64) [probably some settings down a notch]

Around 35-40 is the lowest, usually around 50fps [fully maxed out]

I noticed that while in-game, the "hard" option is also available. Did anyone try it?

I don't consider ANY challange at all in a game to be hardcore. On normal difficulty, the game has none, and unless some fundamental changes are made in the way combat works (no instant potions and no 2 second warnings before enemy power attacks, for example), I don't think hard or gothic will really be harder. Just longer, that's all. But that won't make the combat more fun.

Performance is fine ixigia. Reqs were just a scare, the game runs quite well on an acceptable config.

the performance for me generally is great (highest settings possible) on my gtx460 1gb and an old duo e6750 but i have a strange problem. The game runs 45fps + all the time but when i enter the so called village it drops to 25-28 which is kinda strange cuz i tried on lowest settings possible and the fps in the village was 27-30.Have no idea wheres the problem Confused

CPU is likely your problem. Village is fully of animated characters and generally CPU is responsible for handling animations (depends on the engine really, but in most cases it's CPU)

Also possible that there are many objects in the village compared to the open world, which will also strain the CPU.Try deactivating shadows, that usually helps relieve the CPU.

It's no gothic, thats for sure. Invisible barriers every fu**ing where, now I need to reload the game because of that barrier!! . NPCs stay out at night, you cant even sleep in the game. Characters are boring as hell, no fu**ing wildlife to be seen.

But it looks good.

Gameplay is shit compared to Risen. You cant even jump over small fences. It feels alot more like fable IV then gothic.

I'm certainly not going to buy this game unless they deliver a serious "enhanced version" for free. This game lacks everything that makes a living fantasy world, even monsters.

I am disappoint!

FFS that last post got me.....invisible walls and inability to leap over a fence means that walking off "the path" to find things will most likely be frowned upon.....god damnit.

There is still hope that the complete game and the big island will be better and more intresting. But they wont be able to improve gameplay alot until the game is released.

"Enlightenment is man's emergence from his self-imposed nonage. Nonage is the inability to use one's own understanding without another's guidance. This nonage is self-imposed if its cause lies not in lack of understanding but in indecision and lack of courage to use one's own mind without another's guidance. Dare to know! (Sapere aude.) "Have the courage to use your own understanding," is therefore the motto of the enlightenment."

This is the start of the game and a demo version of it though plus it's probably just the starting island that's available, haven't completed the demo but I doubt there's much more there unsure though and it's probably still a good indication of how the game will be aside from it being nearly the start of the game and not much more.

Yes you can!! Right at the start area there's a fenced pen with a chest. You can jump over that small fence wall easily. No, you can't jump over quest-locked fences but those aren't small, being at least seven feet high.

So quick to judge are you? The demo has only a small area so it may not represent the full game and the big island. You CAN jump over small fences in the game. I'd say the Gothic4 jumping and physics is better than Risen's (which was awful just like Gothic 3's).

Did you finish the demo or quit after the first goblin or what? On normal in the demo, it throws five paladins at you at once and they stick together which does require some strategy.

I agree that normal difficulty is rather easy but I'm willing to accept that because it is also a console game. Just wait for the full game to try the harder settings and also maybe some mods will come out (is it modable?) to increase the difficulty.

You can alter the difficulty manually via the settings.xml file editing to play on "Gothic" mode but I've no idea if it works properly.
(Not much else to adjust, most other stuff is available from within the game, multi-core usage could improve a bit perhaps but that's not easy to edit.)

I did finish the demo. At the palading fight, I just had to dodge and mash left mouse button. I used one instant potion when they hit me two or three times. That's all. And I am going to wait for the full game with my final opinion, but the fact is, that the demo was slightly dissapointing and plainly bland and boring at times. At least for me.

Finished the demo on Normal. Yea, really easy fights. But actually I'm 100% convinced this demo was deliberately made that way. No way that in the 1st hour of game one finds magic hammer with life steal, some magic armor and stomps easly Earth Golem on lvl5. It definetely is not how the game plays out in the full release, I'm sure of it (or the devs are dumb as fuck). What worries me a bit is small number of skills (1 shield skill :<). Oh and for those who haven't played yet: after you use teleport you got "Gothic Tale" completed quest message. Don't read it in journal, I think it might consider slight spoiler for full game LOL.
Anyway, I'm happy with the demo and definetely looking forward to full release, I think it will be very good game.
And techs wise, I got C2D@3.4GHz, Radeon 4890 Vapor-X 1GB, 2GB RAM and it runs flawlessly in 1440x900 rez, all options maxed besides shadows (High instead of Ultra).

Oh, forgot to add: I think archery is overpowered Smile

the demo has its own story in most part.
you wont level up so easy
you wont get that kind of weapons.armors so early in game

BUT THE GOTHIC SERIES IS OFFICIALY DEAD. This game may be a good rpg (dont think so) but has nothing to do with the first 3 games( only the name remained)

WAITING FOR RISEN 2....

Demo is okay, end is crap but like someone said that has probably been tweaked to show off some higher level stuff.

Combat is easy as shit. You can dodge attacks way too easily(Everything except mine crawlers), or you can't dodge them at all (Mine crawlers). If you set it to hard difficulty it actually makes it worse because now every enemy has high amount of health and you just have to spam attack combo, dodge, spam attack combo, dodge, etc. and you really start to notice how repetitive the combat is. And hard difficulty doesn't make it that much harder to play, only takes longer to kill enemies, and you can still dodge their attacks piss easy.

And that fucking canadian witch at the end...omg the rage, so annoying, and so cheesy. Who wrote that shit. I don't have high hopes for a good story anymore.

But overall I liked it, aside from those things.
