Add another strike to my "UUUUUUUUUNLUCKY!!!" metre. Took the caddy out, unscrewed one of the four screws.... rounded the heads off on the other three since they were in so tight and Sony use cheap, soft, screws. So now the caddy is stuck to the HDD and can't be removed.
Oh and the 80GB HDD (same Seagate model as the 60GB in the PS3) is also completely incompatible anyhow. It's a 12.5mm model, as opposed to the 9mm one required, and has a "proprietary" SATA connection that only fits on the HP machine.
I'm having an awesome day. All I need nowis a phonecall from doctor to say the cancer has returned. Yippee.

Sabin - my mate had the same issue (screws today)
he said the incredible hulk put his ps3 together, screws soo tight and rubbish screws at that!!!
he used plyers i think or the other option he was considering was filing a line in top and using flat head screwdriver
good luck la..

Yeah, I just used a pair of grooved pliers and, since the screws are so cheap and soft, "cut" my own grooves into the head. Pliers gripped and removed them instantly. Luckily (hah!) for me I've got a bag of assorted screws, including several hundred HDD mounting screws.
80GB is now in the PS3. 60GB is now in the Pavillion. Let's see if it works.

Restoring backup now. 80GB HDD (74.5GB using Base10 formulae, as it should be) and yet the PS3 has "reserved" 10GB for itself... so the 74.5GB HDD actually ends up being 64GB. For comparison, the PS3 didn't reserve anything off the 60GB, I had 55GB free and 55GB usable.
Go Sony!

You think thats something?
How about this?
I just put a Western digital Internal 500GIG HDD in my PS3 the other day. PS3 formatted the drive, it says 465Gig total, the fucking PS3 took over 50 gigs for itself. It has 412Gigs of Free space.
Are you fucking kidding me. 50 + gigs the PS3 took for itself on the new drive. That is fucking stupid!
So my 500Gig is actually 412Gig on the PS3. PS3 robbed a shit load of free space from the drive.

Tell me about it, but according to some judicious googling .. it's "normal" for the 80GB Bleh. No matter, it's done and the backup has been restored. All games/themes still work fine and even after the backup restoration, I still have 55GB free on the drive which is a lot more than I had free on the 60GB (had 36GB free)
At least now I'll be able to shunt over games that won't work off external, and flood my 500GB external with the rest.
.... if Norwegian customs ever let my Minimus go, that is

That is absolute preposterous!!! What in the fucking hell is Sony doing with that 50GB? "Cache"? Pfft, don't make me laugh. Honestly, that's just scandalous. I'm glad they don't do it on externals, that's for damned sure, with the Base10 in effect - my 500GB external is registering as 465GB.

Here is the thing I researched this shit, and other people who have 500Gigs reported the same thing.
500gig HDD = 465Gigs in PS3 - After the Format is done it says 412Gigs left. Where the fuck did 50+ Gigs go?
According to some dude he says the PS3 uses 12% of any drive you put in, and that its normal. Well fuck that, thats bullshit and way to much.

Aye, the 12% makes sense (given that I had 74.5GB and was only left with 64.5GB) but WHY? What sense does that make? I'd rather be given the option of how much to reserve ... like they do with HOME.

Guys, my 40GB PS3 only has about 24GB of space when it's empty. With nothing on there at all, not even a single jpg it's almost half used up. It's crazy.

Thats the question, why so much space? If the PS3 is able to function properly with 10gigs from a 80 GIG HDD.
Why the fuck would it need 50+ from a bigger drive?
There is no reason why it should take over 50Gigs for itself from a big drive, when it takes way less from smaller drives.
Fucking Sony and their bullshit. They even rob us when we put in our own HDD's.

Yeah they're robbing us. They have all of our stolen GB's locked up in a sweatshop somewhere in china ready to put into new Vaios.

sabin1981 wrote: | I know how Base10, and indeed all about how manufacturers count HDD size, works There's no "eeeeh no" about it. I know why 80GB appears as 74.5GB, I'm just puzzled as to how the PS3 decides to take 12% of the remaining space for itself.
It's got nothing to do with how the "file system counts" it, but simply how HDD manufacturers do. They count 1GB as 1000MB, which - as you say - is false. |
and yet it still didn't explain how in 1go i could upload 9gig !!!???
WTF is a "Go" ???!!!!
is it binary counting ???!!!!
edit: another example , ripped tv series Farscape and recorded to mp4 ps3 has 80 gig on PC but on PS3 its 35go ???!!!

"Go" is another abbreviation for GB, used in places like France and Germany.
zilliver69 wrote: | Can I change my PS3 HDD 120 GB to bigger one? |
Yep, you can use any size you want - as long as the HDD physically fits in the slot (9mm not 12.5mm, which pretty much means most any laptop 2.5" hdd under 750GB)
