So, what alternatives are there today for cryptic people like me? For instance, is there any application that works transparently from boot, meaning, you write a password at boot that allows you to start, and without it you would just get gibberish if you put the hard drive in another computer.
I don't know, I have a hard time with all these applications that make you create containers for your data, because it doesn't seem reliable. The data is still available on an NTFS (or so) partition, and the container is still accessible.
Are there any truly interesting alternatives out there, what do YOU use, and how does it work practically? Are you satisfied with this solution, and primarily, would you recommend it?
Yes, yes I'm back.
Somewhat.

Nope, I'm going to a LAN with lots of people I do not know, and in case some thief grabs something from me (like last year) I don't want them to get any sensitive data.

for this case the windows encryption should be sufficient
Edit:
The new PGP 9.0 might be the right windows tool for you. It features the PGP Whole Disk Encryption wich requires a passphrase to boot windows. if you put this hd in another comp you will see absolutly nothing. However this tool works only with xp and not with mulit-boot setups AND it's only in public beta phase wich ends may 7th.
More info here:

BTW, is it true that the inbuilt Windows XP crypto stores the keys in the user profile or similar? LOL?

How is CompuSec with performance? Can you still play games, etc. ? Or does real-time decryption mess it all up?

The only time i sense its even there is while shutting down..
it takes a much longer time to shut down the comp.
there's a password screen when I boot up and a locking feature for when the comp is on.. that's it.
Performance was not affected, p2p, games all work as before.
Haven't tried plugging the HD as secondary on some other comp yet.
i really hope it really does what it says.
BTW.. after installation it took it 6 hours to encrypt my 80 Gb HD on a 2.8 gig prescot with 512 Mb of ram.
thats a long time....heh..
If u ever try it make sure u do it at night so u can leave it on..
