I don't understand why Morrowind is so popular? it was so dead, static and slow I just lost interest...

For nearly unlimited depth but not a whole lot of direction.... Morrowind. Get it, it's expansions, and a few mods and you'll be busy for weeks. However, if you're the kind who absolutely needs a "connect the dots" style of RPG, MW isn't for you.
Star Wars KOTOR is that "connect the dots" RPG I was talking about... the combat system isn't twich-based, but that's okay, cuz it's an RPG . KOTOR rocks in it's own right because it tells a fantastic story and has some really cool places/situations in it. But if you're into nonstop mouse clicking, you'll find both of these games boring.
Diablo and Diablo 2 make great hack/slash RPG's. The story is kinda cool and you will constantly be enthralled by the infinitely (and randomly) generated loot for you to use.
If you're a multiplayer buff, you might wanna consider one of the Massively Multiplayer games out now. There is no BEST MMO because allegiance to MMO's are about as strong as a Mafia family. Some ppl are Everquest addicts, others play Ultima Online, Star Wars Galaxies, Final Fantasy, etc. Everyone has his own (strong) opinion as to the best MMO, you shouldprobably pick one with friends playing or one that best matches your ideal RPG setting.

Actually its not, it assumes you will take the initiative in starting the main storyline and the major quest plots, and if you dont then sure thats true, but you certainly cant say you actually played it without delving into its main areas.
Morrowinds faults lie within its structure, it gives the players so much freedom that if you dont actively pursue the quests, they will not reveal themselves to you.
I remember a statement that holds true here, Morrowind can only show you the door, you have to open it.

1 Morrowind
2 System Shock 2
3 Arcanum
4 Fallout 1 / 2
5 Gothic 1
Deus Ex and KOTOR (1 of course) and Gothic 2 are also _very_ good, but not on my top 5 list, but certainly on my top 10.

Blasts from the Past:
1. System Shock
2. CyberMage
3. Might & Magic 4&5
4. KOTOR 1
5. Dungeon Siege
All time fave = System Shock - the original. By Origin "We Create Worlds". Shodan was a superb antagonist "Do not meddle in my affairs insect!" They just don't make games like this anymore. Bring back Looking Glass STudios !!

1. Planescape Torment
2. Baldur's Gate
3. Morrowind+expansions - mod community damn don't forget it!
4. Baldur's Gate 2
5. Fallout 1/2
That's not in order really. Except Planescape Torment, it still ranks as the best CRPG I've ever played. I'm still glad I can toss it on XP here and play it every once and a while...it's the story the hooks you. I should go and hunt for a new copy of Fallout and Fallout 2, damn...nothing beats the SPECIAL system...or the story. Fallout had the flaw of the timelimit, Fallout 2 beat it.
Morrowind and it's expansions were a world in itself, you could get lost in. As D4rkKnight said "Morrowind can only show you the door, you have to open it." So true. Once you pack in mod's the world is alive as you want, including being ambushed by vampires at night, or seeing people on the road. People locking their doors at night and leaving their shops(I believe that mod is finished).
BG series, very good built on the classics of the old RPG style adventure and story telling. Step out of line and get squashed by someone bigger then you.
Honorable Mentions: FF7, Arcanum

1. Fallout 1/2
2. Baldur's Gate 2
3. Planescape Torment
4. Neverwinter Nights (main campaign is crappy, but the expansions and some user modules are great)
5. System Shock 2 - greatest game ever.
