Will we see a first or second party UMD burner within 6 months?

Meh... Why bother buying one when the games are $50 a pop. Screw trying to play on a memcard. That is just lame.

A UDF disk holds 1.4 gigs I believe.... I might be wrong on that.... also I could see Sorny (lame simpsons joke) making the unit unable to run games from cards to prevent exactally this kind of thing from happening. Pluss it would just be nice to burn MP3's on a disc instead of a flash card. Flash memory is sooooo 2000's.

UMD discs holds 1,8 gigs and im sure the crackers out there know how to breach that form of security... and I would rather transfer my MP3's and games on a memory stick instead of burning... because that isnt so 2000...

Don't think so mate... the discs are encrypted via 128-bit AES, only decrypted by the unit. I dno't know as much about encryption as I'd like, but I imagine 128bit AES is a bitch to crack 1.8GBs of.

I gree. 1.8GB is a very useless amount of space: It's not enough to store your entire music collection (or the chunk of it you usually listen to, anyway) and it's too much to casually toss a few albums on, a task that 256-512mb accomplishes sufficiently. That, and the likelyhood of us seeing a rewritable UMD disk and burner thereof for under $100 in the next year is slim at best. OTOH, 512MB to 1GB cards are settling at around that price range, and within a year are likely to fall even further.
What is enticing, though, is the warezability of writable UMDs. Sadly, we're not the only ones who understand this and I'm sure that Sony has made sure any would-be hackers of it's flagship product are quickly put in their place.
That, among other reasons is why i'm not buying a PSP at launch. I'm impressed, but not sufficiently so to plop $250 for a defective unit. I'll give it a month or two, probably until Christmas time or so, by which time memory card prices will fall, hackers will have hacked, R&D will have gotten their shit together, and major retailers will allow me to plunder a PSP value pack off them for, say, $175.

I would wager $$$ to Doughnuts that considering how tightly protected sony has this thing, it won't even allow playing a game off a flash card. '
I guess it does have a USB 2.0 connector. Maybe a external HD would allow for some fun. Who knows. I for one am going to wait. $50 a pop for games is waaaaaaaayy to much.

I would take you pu on that for $50k or so, especially considering how demo versions (WORKING PLAYABLE demo versions) are designed to be runnable from flash cards, so I'd easily guess that if hackers can make the PSP believe it's running a demo version, it would run the full game off the card.
Let's suppose that Sony was smart and said "ok, demos. 50mb should be enough for a demo, enough to prevent piracy", and capped the demo size to 50mb, hackers could easily devise a method how, say, "wipeout.exe" is 50mb, holds the engine and a loader for content, and adjacent folder "wipeout" holds the remainder of the files, so the 50mb is the base that's popped into memory, which fetches the other 1.75gb needed to run the game and contains the engine.
The only way I see this NOT happening is if Sony is really smart and prevents the file to communicate with other files on the disk, which would be dumb because it would prevent saving in demos, high scores, usernames, etc. which is counter-productive in the first place, and wouldn't be much good anyway because it's only a matter of time before someone figures out how to bypass it (i.e. using 45mb of that 50mb file as swap space with the folder I mentioned)
Once again, I'm talking out of my ass because I have no clue about the compression methods used, but if it's anything like the current method of emulation for PS1 games (compressed .bin files) it should be possible, even easy to do, to make a 1mb loader you toss onto your disk that you exec to make the system go into "dumb mode" where it runs anything you want it to, followed by running the 300mb compressed game.
What worries me more is space. The PSP is capable of playing MP3 and ATRAC (or whatever Sony's format is called) as well as MP4 video. If that 1.8GB is 1.8GB thanks to WAV audio and MP1 video, it's likely that a 1.8G game can be compressed to 256MB easily. If, OTOH, that's 1.8G with MP3 audio and MP4 video, we're gonna need a 1.8GB card to accomodate the game =/ Since it's going to be a good year or two before 2GB memory stick duo's smell ANYTHING like $100, I'd say that for a while we are going to have to buy our games (of which I'm getting maybe 4 or 5 within the next 2 years, regardless). Plus, considering console games' tendencies to end up in value bins months of their release, I consider it safe to say that most of us should fit software for the next few years within $150-200 anyway.
Those of you who already have a PSP,
