|
 |
Heya folks,
so I'm debating with myself to get a PSP.
And since I'm not really willing to pay for games I'd appreciate it if any of you could give a rundown on what I have to look for, what to avoid, what to do etc. to shit going.
Google wasn't all that helpful, mostly dated articles and threads.
So, share your wisdom oh great NFOrce! (or at least hand me a link that's actually useful )

Rise from the ashes my sweet undead thread! I command you to rise again!
*cough* Ahem. Now that that is done:
Still haven't bought one because I always fear that I'll get one that can't be hacked (yet).
Anyway. I found one at ebay.
It's a 200x, apparently got 5.00 firmware and has the date code 8A.
(the guy says "it's got the date code 8A. People intersted in that know what it means")
So I take it's hackable then?
edit:
Or do I really have to know which mainboard is in it? (Guess he could find out / tell me if I asked)

Yup! The "8A" (..lol) PSP is hackable. You're good to go!

Let's get this one up again.
So I bought a PSP which got the 5.50 Gen-D3 firmware.
Now what do I need in order to play games?
(tutorial links accepted as well )
Plus what's the difference between the .iso files and the .cso files?
(Yes I'm too lazy to google)

You don't need anything more to play games, just download your ISO or CSO and put them in the ISO folder on your memory stick. I recommend nabbing a program called UMDGen, it allows you to optimise and compress ISOs (removing update and dummy data, as well as compressing to CSO) in order to save space.
CSO is basically just a compressed ISO. Using UMDgen it's not unheard of for you to save HUNDREDS of megabytes per game.

Seems to work good so far. Only one problem.
Started playing MGS Peace Walker and after the manga-esque cutscene after the first bit of real gameplay (not counting the tutorial) the game stops loading and my psp switches off O.o

That is an incompatibility with GEN-D3. You can run the GEN-D2 updater to downgrade to D2 (like I did)
Or there is some plugin or something that switches between them or something, I don't remember exactly.

Ah. Thanks.
And some games seem to take forever to boot, is that normal?
Don't hate me, I'm a noob :>

1) Make sure you're using iso for "slow" games
cso are compressed iso and they are slower (sometimes it's not noticeable)
2) Set your clock speed to 333mhz (the maximum, it's safe)
3) What mem stick are you using ?
4) Are you using any shitty plugins ?
5) You are using M33 driver, right ? With no udm inserted, right ?

1) Got it
2) Was about to ask if it's safe to just set it to 333
3) The PSP came with a 16gb San Disk microSDHC and a microSDHC to Memory Stick Pro Duo adapter
4) Plugins would have to be on my memory stick right? Got none of those
5) Just figured out how to change this. Yes M33 driver with no UMD inserted
edit:
oh and the internet seems to agree that gen d3 isn't all that great. What are the alternatives?
edit²:
If games aren't booting (at all. have that happening Castlevania) is it safe to assume there's something wrong with the iso/cso?

Then it's fine, games shouldn't take longer than usual to load.

Just to get this straight. If I was to buy MGS Peace Walker and play it off the UMD it would run fine?
Or on a more general note. If I use bought UMDs do they run fine? (without any conflicts with the cfw ie no crashes)
edit:
it's probably not a good idea to access the internet with a cfw? Or is it ok as long as I stay away from the PSN store etc. Just wanna try streaming stuff from my pc to my ps3 to my psp

But I wouldn't wanna switch between ofw and cfw just for one game. So i guess I'm gonna buy Peace Walker and still pirate the shit out of it

I think you should switch to 5.00 M33-6 and forget about all trouble (except patching new ISOs)
Today I didn't even need to use my AK. I gotta say it was a good day. (c) - Ice Cube

This. GEN is shitware, as far as I'm concerned. I had nothing but hassle when I installed GEN-D2 and the same goes with Prometheus, so screw the useless broken trash. Went back to M33 and everything is golden.

Actually so far the only thing I had trouble with was playing Peace Walker.
Everything else plays fine without problems (probably grabbing pre patched games without knowing it )
edit:
what's the average time a battery charge lasts?

What other games cause problems on gen-d3?
Lemme give you a list of my current library (and they all work or at least I haven't run into any problems)
Kingdom Hearts Birth By Sleep
Everybody's Tennis
Half Minute Hero
Prinny - Can I really be a Hero?
Persona 3 Portable
Lumines 2
Wipeout Pulse
GTA Vice City Stories
GTA Liberty City Stories
GTA Chinatown Wars
Monster Hunter Freedom Unite
Dissidia Final Fantasy
Valkyria Chronicles 2
Final Fantasy Tactics - War Of The Lions
Dunno which games of those are considered new but to my knowledge Kingdom Hearts, Everybody's Tennis, Valkyria Chronicles (and others) are from 2010. *shrug*
Is there handling any different with a custom cfw? And how would I change the cfw (plus with advantages/disadvantages would I have with another - presumeably older? cfw?)

Stay with GEN, now that you got it, doesn't matter if it plays your games fine. I prefer GEN-D2. Don't worry about that stuff, just enjoy the games.
Have you played Patapon ?

The second is just more of the first one, just as it is with Locoroco, for example.

Prometheus v4 -Currently plays up to 6.20 FW. This is what I have installed and appears to be most compatible with everything.
RYZEN 5 2600|RADEON 570| |ASRock X370 Killer|DDR4@2800Mhz||Corsair SPEC-05 Case|AOC G2590FX 24.5''144hz 1ms|

I don't think there's some sort of compatiblity list for games?
Ie what games tend to freeze etc. because Dissidia just froze on me and I have no clue if it's related to the iso or some sort of incompatiblity with the cfw I'm running :/
Ok, now I'm pissed. Dissidia keeps freezing and switching my psp off. I'm guessing the iso is not quite alright.
