So, is there anyone here besides me who hopes this game will have a really, really, REALLY better main plot and subquests than F3? You know, with Chris Avellone ( Fallout Bible, anyone? ) and the generally good writers of Obsidian?
No Boyarsky, but he was more of an artist.
No Cain...wel, that's a shame.
To those playing the console version- be silent, please. I don't wanna throw away my few remaining days of sweet, sweet ignorance just yet:)

Well, it will most definitely be better than FO3 was story-wise. I mean...it was centered around water...and a GECK. How fucking original Bethesda...You can only go up from there.

What's wrong with Oblivion with gun ? you prefer Gothic with gun or Total War with Atomic Bomb ?

personally i thought everything about fo3 sucked. but i looooooooooooooved the atmosphere, and as you get used to it and as you level up, the gameplay and combat becomes tolerable - its definately a game you have to stick with before it opens up and gets good... took me FOUR tries before i actually liked it.
but no argument from me that the story and characters sucked ass - but the background story stuff, was gold... that, to me, is where the true story was - not that water rubbish.

Although I would agree that being unable to at least see some of the good points in Oblivion is generally an indicator of poor taste, I don't think your extension of his statement makes any sense. He's not saying Oblivion + guns = bad. He's saying Oblivion = a steaming pile of shit, thus Oblivion + guns = a steaming pile of shit + guns.

Eh I know a guy who was seemingly die hard against FO3 and when it came out admitted it wasn't half bad. If Obsidian can do better then yay.

After more than 50 hours in Fallout3, I can tell you it has a very good replay value and an excellent and immersive atmosphere. It's not Crysis nor Metro 2033 for graphics and not Baldur Gate or Fallout 1&2 for story,. but come on guys, Fallout 3 is fucking epic !!!

Well, to be honest, the first Fallout was about a water chip and stopping a mutant army. Nothing terribly creative either.
I guess that, maybe in both cases, it's all about the sidequests and exploration.

Ya, that was the point he was making. They used the story from the original two games. Not to say that it was completely bad but they could have been a little more original.

This is a post apocalyptic wasteland. Water is a central component to everyday life. As such the story is almost always going to somehow tie in with that.

yeah but come on... the story is about making clean water. ITS ABOUT MAKING WATER. a necessary life requirement does not automatically make for a good plot.
i dont expect every story to be about stopping the end of the world or something... but you gotta admit... water, as a plot device, is pretty fucking boring - see: quantum of solace. ZZzzzzzzzzz

Weird that the Bethsoft guy says it will unlock at midnight but Steam still says it will unlock 11 hours after that. Wish Steam would update their page.

I seem to recall a heavy conspiracy twist to the plot. The driving force might have been water but there was much more going on.

Depends on what you didn't like about FO3. If you absolutely hated everything about it, it's highly unlikely you'll like this one.

I personally thought FO3 (with some mods included, it should be added) was awesome; spent more than 200 hours on a single playthrough, slowly making my way through the main story as I walked the world, helped people I encountered, mapped the DC ruins and subway net and explored buildings I came across.
All in all, I saw it as a very expansive and immersive world, involving sidequests, and a fair amount of cool and inspiring things to discover while exploring - the house from the Ray Bradbury short story was one of my favourites.
Of course, not a lot of people would spend 200 hours on this kind of game but rather just rush through it in 30-40, though personally I love the kind of adventure/RPG game that really lets you sink into the world and feel as if you become a part of it, for a long time. For me, the journey from when vault 101 was your entire existence to becoming a master of the capital wasteland who had explored every inch of it, was just great.
I also don't really see the gripes about the plot. Sure, maybe it wasn't masterful, but can you name more than a handful of games where that was the case? It does better than most games in my opinion - but maybe it's easy to say with my feeling of the main plot being more of a sideshow when compared to the desire to explore the skeleton of the old world.

Eh I would say it was "not fallout-y enough", or too much like oblivion (in mechanics). Maybe with mods and the DLC it will be better. I will probably grab the iso demo and see.

F3 wasn't Oblivion with guns. It was vastly improved Oblivion with guns.
Most glaring issues from Oblivion were fixed in F3.
Of course, it's still RPG sandbox with light story, so it's not for everyone.
