Or the synth voice "An unexpected visitor. Stay a while, stay forever!" in Impossible Mission? Very Happy Commodore FOREVER, no "generation" has ever given me as much enjoyment as the Commodore generation -- Amiga and C64 will forever be my favourite platforms.

I can't really come up with a "bets of all time" soundtrack list, but out of the recent games there are a few albums that I really liked:
Assassins Creed 2
Mass Effect series
Dragon Age

MW2 - a somewhat cliched action soundtrack, but it actually makes it refreshing
Medal of Honor - some themes from this album are pretty good. It has a much more serious and an A-list musical feel to it, unlike MW2
Red Alert 3 - the Soviet themes are quite memorable, in an over the top kind of a way Smile

Oh, and I also liked the Conviction theme from the latest Splinter Cell. That's all that comes to mind at the moment Smile

In this particular case, I was referring to the recently released MoH. But now that you mention it, the previous titles did indeed have some great scores. The Allied Assault main theme stands out, but for me Airborne is the highlight, Michael Giacchino did some outstanding work there.

I think a lot of very good VGM has already been mentioned (my own all time fav probably Total annihilation) so I decided to dig up some old tracks.

Many songs are fondly remembered because the memories associated with them. It is also somewhat unfair to compare old "blip blop" to the CD/DVD quality tracks, they are great in their own respect Smile

Monkey Island 3:

Playstation: Xenogears was also good throughout imo:

Mega CD: Cobra Command/Thunderstorm:

Mega CD: Solfeace

Mega Drive: Bonanza bros

Mega Drive: Puggsy

Mega Drive: Sword of Vermillion:
(18 secs in)

Mega Drive: Rolo to the rescue:

Mega Drive: James Pond 2: Robocod

Not sure how "good" it is - just very happy.

Playstation 1:
Worms

I´ll get around to more when I remember. Rolling Eyes

Mafia: The City of Lost Heaven
Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory
Red Dead Redemption
Starcraft II
Assassin's Creed
Assassin's Creed II
Hitman: Codename 47
Hitman 2: Silent Assassin
Hitman: Contracts
Hitman: Blood Money
World in Conflict
Quake (great work by Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails)
Quake II (amazing job from Sonic Mayhem)
Prince of Persia: Sands of Time (such a great soundtrack by Stuart Chatwood)
Prince of Persia: Warrior Within (see above)
Second Sight (a great, yet VERY underrated game with glorious OST available for free)
Grim Fandango

EDIT:

I forgot Max Payne series, the main theme is amazing.

That's because, despite the sheer levels of EPICSAUCE oozing from the mighty SID chip, the arcade version had the best copy of the soundtrack. It's kind of hard to recommend an inferior version just because of platform loyalty Very Happy (oh and that link is a remix collection)

=Magical Sound Shower - C64=

=Magical Sound Shower - 'Cade=

=Splash Wave - C64=

=Splash Wave - 'Cade=

But yes, Outrun 86 had a fucking INCREDIBLE soundtrack Very Happy

Does noone remember the space strategy game Ascendancy? It had an amazing soundtrack that gave the game an incredible atmosphere.

Plus each species in the game had their own unique theme.

You win seventeen internets, my good man! Is there truly a better Castlevania title than Symphony? Ever? Not likely. Flawless gameplay with flawless music. Here's another couple of CV tracks from me that I love like I would love my own son, if I had one;

=Lament of Innocence - Anti-soul Mysteries Lab=

=Lament of Innocence - Leon's Theme=

=Super Castlevania IV - Bloody Tears=

=Super Castlevania IV - The Treasury=
