It's not even worthy to have an argument about it. If you play 43284389243289 matches in a row on 10 MS obviously you're not gonna be as good with 200 MS the next game but don't act like it's unplayable since after 3-4 games you're just as good as with 10 MS. Anyone who uses it as an excuse is a sore fucking loser.
Obviously it's preferable to have low MS in all games but the only genre that actually NEEDS it is FPS. |
I don't agree.
Let's not drift too far away, I was merely replying to the "100-200ms is perfectly fine in every genre besides fps" statement. Like I said, warcraft 3 is the living proof. If you say that latency does not matter for warcraft 3 than you are not aware of the grand warcraft 3 scene. Latency plays a big part, and the only way to beat those koreans is to fly over there and play in LAN (and that is exactly what has been happening all those years).

My point was that it doesn't play as big a part as it does in FPS. It does play some part but it's nothing you can't adjust to so that it doesn't actually give you a disadvantage the way it does in say CS.
This isn't really a competitive game anyway so the discussion is pointless and there is still not a single reason to region lock besides greed.

Like in FPSgames, you can't adjust to these things. Warcraft 3 is mostly about hero microing (every top player can already macro almost perfectly), you have to be able to respond immediantly to unexpected situations or projectiles coming your way (certain spells seem like impossible to dodge, but it is possible with low MS, and yes losing 1-2 more units than the opposing player will cost you the game), and I mean immediantly, just like in FPS. There is really nothing to adjust about. Example, if someone throws a stormbolt (projectile stun) at your hero, there is no time left to activate anti-magic or townportal when you have 100-200ms. There are plenty of other examples.
It's a huge setback if your hero dies, and it is almost always GG after the 15min mark.
This is also true for HoN, but these kinds of mistakes won't cost you the game, unlike in a 1on1 game like warcraft 3.

This we can all agree to, ofcourse.

Well it wasn't just increased latency, it would be randomly dropping out of games, failing to join games, failing to create games, huge lag spikes, etc. It makes sense for them to be want to be able to more easily manage separate regional servers. I don't think they are doing it necessarily out of greed.. they're obviously not gonna mind people buying extra copies though.

If it wasn't out of greed, they would give you the option to CHOOSE what server you play on - at will - but instead they region lock each game and expect you to PURCHASE a copy for any alternate regions to play on. If that's not greed, then I simply don't know what is.

Think about localizatiion and price differentials. Otherwise it would be cheaper for everyone to grab a key or version sold for a pittance from Thailand than to pick up a copy costing possibly 4x as much in the USA. You can call it greed but from Blizzards point of view it's simply good business practice in this day and age of the internet.

What a crock of shit. They could region lock the CLIENT so that, for example, a US copy would only install if you had a US IP - but you could still play online against anyone else in any country. Of course install-locking is invasive and I don't support that whatsoever, but it's a better fucking option than simply saying "Screw you! You can't play with anyone outside your own area"
Still, it's Blizzard.. so no matter what they fuck you with, people will still defend them. *yawn*

If it keeps annoying-ass Koreans out of my game, I am happy with it.
I however never had any friends from Europe or Asia to play with.. so I'm not affected.
edit: hopefully it will stop the idiots from making a billion spam/bot accounts too.

Yeah I really don't care if I don't have to deal with the rednecks but there is still no reason to lock it.

Not defending anyone, don't know where you got that misconception. Not like I work for Blizzard or aspire to make Warcraft 5 or anything..
Just pointing out the fact that theres obviously logic behind their way of doing things. Client side would not work as well as regional server locks simply for the fact that once the client was cracked (which it probably would be a few days after release), whats then to stop people from buying all the cheap foreign keys online or picking up cheap versions from the net oversees, if an import copy's online MP is exactly the same as the higher priced US/European versions.

Funny how no other games do this, isn't it? It's always just Blizzard shite and the odd Korean MMO >_>
I can buy a Ruskie copy of MOH/COD/insert any name you want .. and it will play with anyone else, anywhere in the world.

The region lock in SC2 is temporary, Blizzard are gradually removing it. Already removed the one for the aussies and the peeps in that region.

Protip: Blizzard are only saying that to prevent an uproar. If you still believe that then I don't know what to say.
The only reason the Aussies can play on the American servers is because the Aussie servers were dead.

Its You, no matter what, you'll bitch nd moan about their games, about their politics, yet you love all of their games ...
Obviously anyone who says something positive about Blizzard is a fanboy anyway and anyone saying something bad about them is .. right ... oh the irony, oh the FAIL.
Anyway sabin, keep on bitching and moaning, you're really good at it LOL.
