Usually I like CloneDVDs better than cracked releases so I don't have to wait for patches to be cracked. But that doesn't work if the game uses Steam, right? You would need a Steam emulator or something?

Usually, if you have a CloneDVD of the game and a new patch is released, you can just install the official patch without having to wait for a cracked patch. But Civ5 uses Steam to patch the game, so CloneDVD by itself isn't enough.

I'm mildly annoyed that neither skidrow nor any other group bothered to release Civ5 update or free mongol dlc yet.

In practice, it doesn't work with new CEG protected games.

Maybe they got annoyed at how they were releasing like lots of little patches every few days. Looks like it has settled down now though and there won't be any official patches/DLC for a while, so Skidrow should go ahead and do update 3.

Although it rare for them to abandon updates, sometimes they do release two patches at once (like 1.08 and 1.09 for Elemental).

It's not unheard of for another group to start releasing patches that the original group no longer supported. It would be nice if Skidrow said "Hey we are done with this game and are not going to release any more updates," so somebody else can step in and take over.
