Im trying to purchase something from a guy online. I found him on craigslist. He lives in another state and he wants to do the transaction like this:

"hi sam,

The transaction with eBay is quite simple and secure for both . I will start the transaction with them and you will receive an invoice to send the money to an ebay lawyer who will act as a third party in our transaction. Once he will receives the money , he will secure your payment and will confirm to me so I can start the delivery with FedEx and provide to you all delivery details. Once you receive the product and make sure it is as described ( like new condition, everything works) , you will confirm to the ebay lawyer who will send me the money. All this time until you confirm to the ebay lawyer you will have 100% control of the money and can cancel the transaction anytime and they will refund all your money (you will get 100% Buyer Protection) . I say it is pretty safe since if the product will not be as I said, you can cancel the transaction, send the product back on my cost and eBay will send you the money back. If you agree with this, please email me your complete name and address so I can start the transaction .

-thanks"

Scam? or real?

I use ebay quite frequently but I never heard of this transaction method

I'd be pretty wary, I've had a few of my clients emails that got cracked recently on our shared hosting servers start being used for Craigslist Scams. Selling phones and using similar methods. The method of payment also makes no sense.

It also, as far as language usage and general sentence structure, looks highly similar to this:

The method he is describing is called escrow - an independent third party holds the money until you recieve and accept the goods you've bought.

But who is this so called "eBay-lawyer"? That's what sounds fishy to me. Does eBay have that service? I use eBay frequently aswell, but I always use Paypal anyway.. So look it up if they have this service he's talking about.

There are numerous other escrow services in the USA though, so find a legit one and ask to use that one instead, see if he agrees to it Smile

Alright, found this instantly with one Google-search Razz

http://pages.ebay.com/help/pay/escrow.html
Quote:
Important: Only use Escrow.com.

Using Escrow.com can help keep buyers and sellers safe from fraud. When you use Escrow.com, they collect the money from the buyer and hold it until the buyer and seller agree that the terms of the sale have been met. Once both parties are satisfied, Escrow.com sends the payment to the seller. Escrow.com is licensed and regulated company, and the only escrow service that can be used for eBay transactions.

Basically this is what happened was; on monday I was on craigslist because I was looking for a video card. There aren't many on craigslist so I figured I might find a good price. I found a guy who listed "Complete Gaming Computer System - $1200" with some pretty nice specs. So I messaged him saying:

"Hi, I am interested in your item. Would you be willing to sell specific components from the PC?"

And he replies back (using e-mail address bruce2fisher@gmail.com) with:

"Hello,

I still have the Complete Computer Gaming System and I want to sell it for only US$ 1200.00 . It is a small price , but I need some extra money and this is the only thing I can sell since I was just moved with my work in Great Falls MT.It is in perfect condition , no damage or scratches. I bought it from a local store and I still have the documents . If you want to buy this , I can deliver it to you since I have a FedEx office close to where I stay here . I know this is not a normal craiglist deal , but I need to sell this and here in Great Falls nobody wants to buy this . If you still want to buy it, we can use eBay to secure this transaction and make it a safe one for both. Let me know if you want to buy it so I can explain to you how everything works and how we are both protected. I can ship it anywhere.

Thanks
Bruce Fisher"

And then I replied telling him I dont want the entire PC I just want some of the parts. I told him Im offering $900 for several specific components from the PC but he replied with:

"Hello,

if you want to buy it , I will sell it to you for $900 without the Dell Monitor , keyboard & mouse. Is that ok?

Thanks,
Bruce"

So I said sure why not. Thats when he sent me the e-mail last night which I posted in the first post of this page. And then this is the invoice I got after I sent my name and address:

^
"craiglist" Laughing & that pic is obviously not the PC lol. In the original craigslist ad he had a PC in a mountain mods case.

The initial e-mail address(bruce2fisher@gmail.com) is even fishy. Its very similar to the e-mails in scammer database (link posted by Spazmotic)

ex: deborah77gibson@aol.com, john34franklin@gmail.com

So i replied last night saying:

"Hi Bruce, Im having a few problems with the invoice. I cannot use an escrow service outside of escrow.com. Also I cannot use any payment method other than PayPal. Also the picture in the invoice doesn't show the computer. It shows some pioneer sound machine.

Please get back to me.
-Thanks"

Lol I never purchased anything from craigslist before. I always use ebay and I thought this guy was going to post the item on ebay so I can buy it. I never heard of this escrow/lawyer method before. Definitely gonna stay away from craigslist and escrow

craigslist is only good if your buying something from someone in your local area so you can check the item out before purchase. I have bought and sold shit with them many times,
