At the end of this month, I'm as of now planning on getting one - anyone here already have one? I've read enough reviews and user comments already to know what is actually needed to know from a hardware/software standpoint - but maybe anyone has run into some weird situations, I mean it's somewhat big, anyone have issues with that?

I was initally going to get a WP7-phone, but it seems that WP7 is more of a iOS-ish clone, which I outright hate. I do NOT want a phone that REQUIRES some bloatware so that I can copy files to it, I just want to plug it in, drag & drop files like an external HDD. Also, it seems that you can't replace the SD-card in WP7-phones, among other limitations and other Apple-esque bullshit.

Android seems very open, flexible and customizable, just the way I like it!

And speaking of Android, I've never used a phone with it - how is Froyo? People seem to like it Smile

LOL WP7. Shit is even worse than iPhone OS 1.0. Laughing Android all the way.

There is also the HTC Desire Z which is also very nice and has a built in keyboard. But the CPU is only 800 MHz. What more, the Desire HD also has a large screen (4.3"), so using a virtual keyboard is not a problem to say the least.

Then go here for all info (ala Roms, Apps, etc.) you need:

My brother has the Desire HD. It's a big phone as you say, but you get a nice big display for it. I think it's probably overhyped - but what phone isn't! (i'm on the iPhone 4 but think i'll go android next!).

Here in UK Orange have just released the HTC San Fransisco - it's a budget Android phone, £99 but can run android 2.2 and has all the works (wifi bt etc). I have got my wife one of these for christmas. It's not as smooth as my iphone 4, or my brothers desire HD, but it's a 6th of the price Smile

All in all, if you can live with the negatives of the HD - e.g. really poor battery, not as good a display at the iphone 4, then you should get it.

I'd still probably just get the original htc desire though... and save lots of money Smile

Fuck the budget, the Desire Z or the "standard" Desire - I want the latest and greatest model if I'm getting a new one anyway Very Happy

Oh, and another thing I dislike about the Z is the keyboard itself - I can use a touch keyboard no problems. Also my GF has a N97, while it's nice to have a keyobard, I just think it makes the phone unneccessarily big.

Thanks for both posts, I'll gladly take any more input if available Smile

Take the Samsung Galaxy S I 9000. It's processor is far superior to the common snapdragon in HTC devices. And with 4.0" the screen is very nice and thanks to AMOLED it's very bright and has a nice contrast Smile

Believe me, I've done the Desire HD/Galaxy S comparison to death, and I my current phone is a Samsung - and the Desire HD still wins.

The processing power is not better per se on the Galaxy, BUT it does have a dedicated PowerVR gpu, which on its own handles 3D-applications/games better than the Desire. But all in all, they are quite similar in terms of power.

Here's some fun facts though - the Swedish Android-site Swedroid ran some benchmarks on the Desire HD (and a number of other Android-phones), and here are the total result from a number of benchmarks:

The tests involved in the total are:
Input
CPU
Memory
I/O
2D
3D OpenGL ES 1.1

And also, interestingly, the Desire HD came out on top on two other CPU-benchmarks, Sunspider and Linpack.

So safe to say, it's a decent phone in terms of processing power Smile

Actually the Desire HD is more expensive than the Galaxy S Razz Maybe you're thinking of the older Desire, without the "HD" at the end? Smile

bleh, I always urge people to stay away from HTC, their phones are cheap shit, their support for their phones blow dick, and their battery life is horrible, not too mention their shit UI that takes them months of extra time to push an update to their phone, which isn't all that likely cause they'd rather release a new phone than update an older one.

Friend has an HTC, he's throwing it in the garbage for a motorola. Friend just got an HTC with winmobile, she's bringing it back this weekend to get a samsung android.

HTC = fancy looking phone...nothing much else.

To answer your question about FROYO, it's the god damn bees knees of updates. Everything runs amazing, if you run a different home launcher like Launcher Pro, your shit will FLY.

Hm, well from what I've heard and read (a lot actually), HTC used to be so-so quality wise, but that was a somewhat long time ago - the Desire/Desire HD for example has been praised for it's quality and the quality "feel" it has. Aluminium unibody construction = fap.

The Desire HD has the latest HTC Sense, 2.0, and Swedroid said (half-ass translation by me):

"Desire HD and Sense 2.0 are simply one of the most stable combinations we've tried, maybe only falling short of the Nexus One and it's raw, clean Android experience. No annoying GPS-bugs, no issues with lagging or problematic touch screen - it all just works, both well and fast."

Also, when summarizing their review, they had the point "Absolute top quality in terms of materials and feel" in their Pro's-list.

And on another forum i frequently visit, some people were talking about the HD and Adnroid - while almost everyone who posted in the thread was very happy with their HTC handsets, one post really explained it for me - he had used old phones back when HTC was named Qtek, then early HTC phones, and he thought they were shit. And they probably were. But he had given the Desire a chance, and he loves it, and told us to forget anything regarding HTC that came out before 2009 - the new quality of their phones are great Smile

Oh theres no issue with sense UI itself. It's the fact that it's a custom UI from HTC, so when an update comes out, instead of it getting instantly pushed to the phone like my motorola droid, HTC has to delay and re-program sense to work with new update

Thus why they're notorious for dropping phone support as likely as they are to release a new phone.

My buddy got a nice HTC phone, has 2.1 on it, HTC said fuck it and dropped the support for it cause they release 3 new phones 4 months later. Now he's stuck on 2.1. He's selling it and getting a motorola.

LOL at people waiting for "official" updates. grinhurtA grinhurtA grinhurtA grinhurtA. If people bother getting an Android phone, time to "grow up" and lrn2xda. People are releasing updates all the time for all phones, official supported or not. (Not just for Android phones, grinhurtA started as a WM developers community.) Official support will always end eventually, sooner or later, doesn't matter. Most unofficial ROMs are better anyway, so I don't see what the problem is. No, your warranty does not go bye bye if you flush a custom ROM.

HTC is the largest PDA and smartphone manufacturer in the world for a reason (not, their phones do not have low prices, so that's not the reason Laughing). They even manufactured Google's Nexus One, which was in direct competition to their own Android phones. Calling them cheap is immensely stupid, especially coming from someone using a Motorola device. The Sense UI, like anything in any modular system is removable. And as with all customized devices, people make "clean" ROMs for these people that do not like the custom GUIs that may be memory hungry. (I'm using a clean 6.5.5 WM ROM now for example.)

Im calling HTC cheap because their shitty phones are just that, cheap crappy plastic designs that break if you drop them.

Motorolla at least builds their androids with heavy casing and uses gorilla glas so scratches and so forth aren't a problem

People shouldn't have to learn how to hack and root phones to get support for them.

I know a lot of people who aren't tech savy period (half the android market) to root an android phone (theres a lot more to it than jailbreaking an iPhone) My friends Amy and Danielle both love their androids for what they can do with it, but rooting it? Doubt they'd ever be able to figure that all out. They simply aren't into tech like that.

So with that said, yes I expect a company to back their phones by pushing updates without someone having to hack their phone to get it, theres no reason for them not to either, the phones have more than enough power, and 2.2 made the OS even faster than it previously was. It's just down to either greed (HTC releasing more phones than it does updates) or pure lazyness..(oh look, HTC can take this spot too)

oh and leo, I fucking LOL'd at your sig. It'd be my luck if I bought a cemetary lmao

[edit] Just ran this benchmark to see where my phone rated at. IT's OC'd to 800mhz and got 1067

You could disable sense from earlier Sense roms, tbh it wont effect me because one of the first things I will do will be to root it (something I need to research before placing my order later today of course)

Same friends wouldn't care if they run Android 2.1 or 2.2 or 3.0 beta as long as it's stable and they can run their SMS and browsers (typical derp behavior - why does someone get a smartphone or a PDA if they use the features of a normal phone). So I don't see the point still. You are tech savvy, therefore know about updates, and improvements in the Android OS, thus you want to update - and you know how to. Your friends are happy with what they have. It's similar BTW with the iPhone in the case of the non-techsavvy friends. They just have no clue what jailbreaking is (unless someone tells them), so they are happy with what they have. The smarter users jailbreak, but sorry, iPhone OS is an insult to anyone with a little intelligence, so there you have it.
