So u won't buy the game because CD Projekt don't approve piracy? |
I didn't like their hilariously poor and pathetic attempt to face the problem instead of staying silent on the matter and sell millions of copies of their overpriced product.
I would have liked to try the game before spending money on it, but apparently this is not possible since my privacy is going to be raped and a SWAT team is going to break in my house as soon as I start utorrent*.
*It's a hypothetic scenario, nobody uses torrents in 2010 anyway. |
I use torrents(not piece of trash public sites) and they won't find me or break my door down.
Anyway indeed this turned me off from even thinking about buying the game. |
Yup I meant public trackers

Absolutely correct. 10 experience points for succeeding in understanding what was being discussed in the last 6-7 posts!

Yeah it's clearly because they don't support piracy.
I'm just waiting for them to turn into the RIAA.

Well it's not the only higher profile release that used this approach. At least they are upfront about their intentions, unlike the previous attempts by other publishers. All they intend to do is to scare off some of the mainstream pub torrent crowd from mass leeching it day-one.
They are making a PC-only release at the moment, with a high-budget game, if people want things like that to keep happening, the game's got to sell, so I am guessing they are trying to improve the odds of that happening.
I think it's in our best interests that they succeed as well and this kind of approach is better than some crappy DRM, I'd say. The more informed people still have other ways of getting their games aside from pub torrents anyway.
It does seem a little "out of character" considering how they boasted about their sale numbers when announcing the sequel: PC gaming not dead/piracy not an issue and all that. Still, not sure if I'd change my mind about buying the game because of that. Seems kinda unreasonable. But I never intended to buy it anyway, so I am not the one to talk

It may be a shock to you guys, but NO game developer approves piracy.
I don't see how this suddenly makes them evil?

With all said, Witcher had whole first chapter (out of 5) available in its game demo, which is pretty refreshing compared to mostly poor demos other games get (if any).

Not bad! But still, IMO, the "proper" ownership of this game requires one to have a box. A game and it's box is... well... another story.
Don't get me wrong, I own and will buy games on Steam; mostly multiplayer ones, but the proper proof (and pleasure) of owning the game, as in it's box, is quite more rewarding. You keep it in your hands and hop around the house while kids stare and the game installs... you read the game manual while taking a dump... you put the box on your desk near your display and start grinning in a perpetuum idiot way...
Owning and paying for "numbers" is still new and "1984"-ish for me. And yeah... I know... this system is the future... So then call me old fashioned.

So... the GOG edition of the game will be stripped of any DRM in order to make it heavy torrent-able (and pleasing a few legit buyers while they're at it, I guess ) therefore enabling CDProjekt to sue the illegal downloaders for tons of money.
What a cunning plan.

even if someone leaves the game in front of my door i won't bother picking it up
2 clicks is easier > begin download .
and everybody knows the installation is faster from a HDD .

chiv is a sad sad panda
only see a listing in NZ for a 'premium' edition, which is incredibly stripped down and doesnt have anywhere near as much cool shit in it as the collectors edition does...
will be happy panda if collectors edition does eventually make it here though

Also the problem might be, how can I prove one day I bought the GoG.com copy legally and didn't download it from somewhere? Since there is no activation, serial key or whatever, and the e-mail receipt is... well, just an e-mail.
I just might stick to boxed version.

The guy is just venting ideas, this one being impossible. I assume they'll spread a torrent version and log the IPs connected to it. All that effort, in many countries, going through all that legal shit. No company would go through all that crap.

I don't see how anyone can be upset by the idea... I mean the legit customers get a DRM-free. That's good isn't it? I mean no way i'm buying it since i never buy games, but at least they aren't screwing their customers with draconian DRM like Ubisoft for example? Of course they are anti-piracy, i would be too if i was a game developer.
And when i download the game (from a private tracker) if by some miracle i get the letter, i look forward to seeing them sue me with our legal system already totally backed up with 150000+ unsolved cases and judges who don't even understand what downloading means...

There is no way for anyone to get details about who is behind IP address blah without a warrant where I live AFAIK. Some ISPs will bend over to make it seem like they're doing the real thing like accepting infringement letters but then sending them through the shredder.
Dudes: IP blah is infringing on our contents
ISP: We don't care
Nothing happens
What they are doing is cashing in on clueless noobs, clueless potentially innocent noobs. People can't afford a law suit even if they're in the right.
