I did my bachelors degree from 18-21, my masters at 22 and my PhD took 2 years and approx 6 months to complete. My thesis was contributed to by the project I completed in my masters and thus it took less time then usual. I don't know where you live but 9-10 years is bullshit! More like a professorship then a doctorate. |
No one would accept a PhD thesis written after 2.5 years here unless it's pure brilliance. I have never seen anyone do it. If you get your PhD here at 3.5 years, it's considered a major achievement. I also didn't know there were single year research masters. Getting your own lab space plus major grants without any prior published works is also weird. I guess it's a difference in countries.
I'm not saying you're lying, you're obviously smart enough for a masters degree, I just thought it was strange.

My masters took 2 years, I'm not sure of the exact dates but I started it not long after I turned 21, within the same year that I got my undergraduate degree. I know the time frames are hugely different to America if that's where you live, so a comparison is meaningless. As for the thesis having to be brilliant, well it doesn't matter about it's quality, you can submit it at any point after 2 years, 4 years is essentially the time limit for normal submission. But if it fails to satisfy then you are of course fucked so it's a risk to hand it in early. Like I've mentioned, I was rushed for certain reasons and the quality did suffer because of it.
I've already explained in other threads/posts the reasons why I was able to get the lab space, but knowing the administrator helped. Remember we're only talking about a research module in a much larger laboratory, I don't have a lab to myself, there are other scientists working there and the majority of the more expensive equipment is communal.
I've never claimed to have any major grants, but I do have a research contract whereby the university expect experimental data after a defined time period, but the money is paid in instalments based on progress. I've only really talked about this in more detail in the VIP forum as it's not something I want public.
I've also already explained the situation on my small amount of published and unpublished work. But I'm not willing to divulge too much information on this forum since I don't want my identity known.
I do admit that my situation isn't wholly based on academic excellence, and that knowing and/or being related to certain people has aided my progress. But make no mistake, I'm a serious scientist and I've put in a lot of time to get where I am, forgoing a lot of social and personal activities in the process. Only now do I have enough time to actually live a life outside the lab and I'm much happier for it.
It's at your discretion whether you believe me or not, but I've never boasted about any of this and I don't make a point of telling everyone I can. I've just revealed it gradually over the many years I've been here in response to relevant questions, but I'm at a point now where many people on the forum know of my situation so I don't make any efforts to hide it. I am proud of my education, but it can result in a certain prejudice against me so it's hardly the first thing I reveal to new people.

It CAN be cool, but there has been much tedium involved before I got to the point where I could actually begin testing the viral prototypes in vivo. I still get disillusioned some times and wonder if I want to spend the rest of my life in a lab, and it can be lonely as my job doesn't offer me much opportunity to meet people. I recently split up with my girlfriend of ten months so this feeling is particularly pronounced.
Hence the reasons behind me taking this 'teaching' job, I want to get out there and meet new people, it just a coincidence those people will likely be 18 year old hotties!

Had my first demonstration session at the college today! While I was sad to see such an abundance of 18 year old hotties considering they are off limits; my spirits were buoyed by the discovery that there are not one, but three members of staff who are damn attractive and in their early 20's. I've already found out that one of them is single, as she slipped it into conversation, which is a good sign, right!?

Because the college I'm working at only has an age range from 16-18, otherwise I would heed your advice.
Also to be clear I'm really not some pimp that goes around shagging any bird he can, I'm quite discerning in this respect and prefer relationship sex to the casual kind. So hypothetically lets say a 25 year old had sex with a 17 ( almost 18 ) year old, what would you think of that person? Lets say alcohol was involved, does that change your opinion? How about if it was the 17 year old who was the instigator?

I would think the 25 year old is a normal human being who has a normal sex drive. If alcohol was involved, I would think there is a possibility that the 25 year old tricked/forced the naive 17 year old into drinking a massive amount of alcohol so the 17 year old becomes so drunk that she just becomes an animal and fucks the 25 year old without making an descision in her mind. If the 25 year old told me the 17 year old was the instigator, I would believe the 25 year old but many people will think that the 25 year old is bullshitting.
