Indeed, the 360 pad was the first one ever made.

I just downloaded the Onlive client and was surprised to see that it works even though i'm in the UK, well i can browse the giant wall of games being played and spectate players etc. Is there anything i can actually try for free on there? I've only seen stuff available for purchase and i'm not spending a single dollar especially as there's no servers in the UK, but i would be interested to play something if there was no cost.
Graphics look better than i expected but they are still way too blurry for any modern games. I would definitely use it if it came bundled with a cable TV service or something though.

Hmmm...games...playing for free? A trial maybe of somekind? Yes yes...let me think, what could that be?
Maybe a game DEMO?
(That they advertise as the first thing on the freaking frontpage: "Instant access to free demos")

Quote: | For the purposes of our review, I used the MicroConsole on my primary gaming display: a 52" LCD television viewed from a distance of roughly nine feet. I have a 68 megabit per second downstream broadband connection. |
A test in a "real world" connection would be more adequate IMO.

Yeah but there are people that already say that it works well enough FOR THEM.
Just like there are plenty of people that play on consoles with sub-hd graphics, ~25fps, 0x AA games and claim that everything looks and feels amazing.
IGN reviewed it and calls it "Impressive 8/10" http://uk.gear.ign.com/articles/113/1135364p1.html
"Our experiences on an average 4 to 6Mbps home connection were pretty solid. Games ran smoothly without framerate drops, interruption, or sizable amounts of compression, and navigating menus and firing up games was a cinch."
There are plenty of people, like that reviewer who find its performance more than acceptable.

I don't doubt that it runs fine with shitty GFX (Have seen it myself), but if Onlive got as popular as Steam, the amount of Server farms needed, would be insane.
Btw. In addition to that, imagine if some time in the future, the whole Western World wants their games this way plus HD streaming movies... Then even Fiber optic cables wouldn't be enough to deliver a "100% always on for everybody", it's just way to much traffic that needs to be routed all over the world, while maintaining stable connections.
And if that isn't possible, I doubt that people will be satisfied with their TV/Gaming subscriptions. Imagine millions of people watching the latest chapter of a popular show, and then Boom! several seconds or minutes of garbage pixels on the tv, or what about Hackers shutting down the service for a whole country?
People don't wanna pay for that.
On a personal note, I hope we will never be forced to get all our entertainment by subscription, because then the fucking Corporation's will force feed us all kinds of shitty subscriptions, like I could be forced to accept 50 channels that I never watch, just because I want 10 good channels (this is already happening!), and I can't imagine that they wouldn't do the same with Gaming if they could.
Face it. Every big corporation's wet dream is Forced subscriptions for everything related to entertainment, because it's nearly impossible for the End User to know what price is fitting for the different subscriptions, since most subscriptions are filled with shitty entertainment, but on the surface the subs looks great since there is a lot of apparent value in the subscribtions.

Onlinve subscription is back, but...different.
The sub is now 9.99 a month with unlimited access to 14 games currently with more coming. The beta for this is as of now only available to people who have purchased the little tv adapter. The option to purchase your games and not have the sub fee is still available if you prefer that method. It's pretty much like gametap now but without having to install the games.

I got an invite to this thing and tried it out, it's...not that good, the FPS is ok and so are controls more or less, but the lag is really noticeable. Also the client is really REALLY buggy, crashes a whole lot on my system. The fact is, there's no way around the input lag, even if you had a decent connection, the lag is a matter of physics issue that has no solution, you move something on the screen and it's going to take a split second to respond. This is only playable with less than a 70ms response time to the server, any more and it's going to be nearly unplayable when quick reaction is required, such as the heat of battle or sniping. In my opinion this is only going to really be decent with non-FPS/Twitch games such as RTSs.

Haha, didn't the idiot say that a monthly fee isn't needed ? On that article at the top of this page.
Their frantic changing of subscription fees indicates they are close to bankruptcy. Good, good.

I don't think that it's "needed". I believe it's an option.
Also, I found this that I haven't read before, but I don't know if it was posted before I came to this forum:
Quote: | Developer Crytek has revealed to GamesIndustry.biz that it has researched the viability of a streaming videogame service similar to those currently being touted by OnLive and Gaikai.
However, the Crysis studio concluded that such a service would not be possible until around 2013 at the earliest.
"We had our research in 2005 on this subject but we stopped around 2007 because we had doubts about economics of scale. But that was at a time when bandwidth was more expensive," said CEO Cevat Yerli.
"We saw that by 2013 - 2015 with the development of bandwidths and household connections worldwide that it might become more viable then."
Yerli said that the main barrier would be relying on the technology of broadband providers to ensure a smooth connection and gameplay experience.
"It doesn't take a lot to make a video-based renderer, but what you need is the right infrastructure that is beyond the technology we have, it's more like cable net providers and communication networks.
"They have to provide fast bandwidths and connectivity in order to allow such technology to excel. So as it was dependent on somebody else, we decided to wait," he detailed. |

Hm.. Why there isn't a hacker attacking Blizzard's servers or Steam's servers? What's the difference? Would OnLive's servers be easier to attack? How so?
