Hey guys.
I've got a bit of a trouble with my ATI Radeon HD 4870 stock fan... long story short, the fan doesn't work at all, and I have to use my finger in order to get it to spin around for a while (Doesn't spin for long though, give or take 15 minutes).

I was wondering if there are any methods in repairing the fan without voiding the warranty, I've read that oiling the fan can be a good idea, I have no idea which kind of oil that would be suited best for the job though, but maybe one of you guys know?

I'd return this pile of shite ASAP if I had the receipt in hand... been looking for it for a while.

Thanks,
wiz

Hehe, bought it 9 months ago, so 3 months left, been doing pretty much everything but using grease/oil to fix the fan, but all to no avail... will see the outcome tomorrow.

usually you need to get to the electric motor on the fan. On one side there's a sticker on the fan, CAREFULLY remove that sticker (not completeky, leave it on halfway) till you can reach the bearings and put one drop of sewing machine type oil in there, any thin oil will do basically. Then put the sticker back on so nothing like dust and stuff can get in there. Obviously try not to touch the sticky side with your fingers, use a scalpel or something and you should be good to go, if that is indeed the cause of your problem.

It could just be dirt in the bearing. I just used some bicycle oil and spun it with a vacuum cleaner.

Is there any way to apply oil without voiding the warranty? I guess that sticker Perry was on about is the thing they check if warranty has been breached?

well technically if it is still under warranty, and the fan isn't working, just send it in and let them fix it? Smile

Then why are you worried about voiding the warranty? If you can't rma it anyway, then take the fucker apart already and fix the damned fan Smile

It cost 200 euros when I bought it, so if warranty is in check I can pretty much turn in the card and get a modern card 200 euros cheaper. JUST NEED THE FUCKING RECEIPT...

did you pay in cash or credit? If you used a card you could use an old statement for proof of purchase.
