PostPosted: Fri, 24th Dec 2010 11:35    Post subject: A good and cheap 24'' monitor
So I am looking for a new 24'' monitor but I'm on a kind of a budget. Looking at prizes BenQ monitors are the cheapest but it's hard to find reviews for many of their models. So I would appreciate some advice there. If indeed they are not good what other monitors would you suggest keeping in mind that I have a budget of about 300$ +- 10%. Also is there any noticeable difference between 2 ms and 5 ms response time? I'm gonna be using the monitor for gaming and watching movies/tv shows.
The specific models that I was looking at:

BenQ G2420HDBL
BenQ V2410 Eco LED

There are a few alternatives for the same prize from ACER,LG,iiyama and Phillips but the cheap LED is tempting. The only LEDs I found at a similar prize from another company were Samsung BX2431 and BX2440.

Any and all advice is appreciated!

The G2420HDBL will do the job nicely.
Go for it Smile

I've recently bought the SyncMaster P2470H for 208€, quite an excellent deal for such a good monitor Smile

(It's not a led, but it comes with a sufficiently high contrast and 2ms response time. )

The P2470H costs around 400$ where I live so it's out of my budget but thanks for the advice. Think I'm gonna go for the G2420HDBL. Anybody have some first hand experience with it?

Yeh, i picked one up after my big sammy screan broke and i needed something cheaper that i could buy right away.
No regrets there. It's a good screen and well worth the asking price.

Hehe true, my trusty 4870 is struggling a bit at 1080p, but hopefully seems that it can still handle almost all the recent games without any particular problem (at the cost of keeping the AA disabled though Razz ).

could it have just been a dodgy unit? I found a thread at overclockerz about the BenQ G2420HDBL and the feedback there was very good.

It probably was a dodgy unit, ignore him. I might just as well retort to him that my 206BW also had a dead pixel when I bought it, and compared to my LG its colours are aweful, as is its contrast. Plus, in the 3 years I've had it (the replacement), 2 pixels died. ONOZ SAMSUNG SUCKS Sad

For its price, it looks like a decent monitor.

Heh generally it behaves fine ("thanks" to all the console ports), but with some titles such as BFBC2 or F1 2010 I have to lower the details and/or the resolution a bit, while before they were running rather smoothly at high details. Not a problem though, I'm not a graphics whore after all Razz

No, it was fine for its time. Just saying you can't even compare one model of one brand to another model of the same brand. Samsungs P monitors are quite terrible for someone like me who needs/wants accurate colours. And my W2253V (not the -PF version with crappy Philips panel, but the original one) is actually praised for its decent factory-default colours (Delta E just over 3; my Samsung has over 6). Contrast isn't amazing, but with a TN panel that's not really news.

then my friend u need an ips panel, if u are that picky

personally atm i have benq g2412hd, got it for free from a friend who decided to go whole laptop
which is an older model to 2420hd but it's a same shit really and i hardly noticed any difference between lcd and led, except maybe for white bleed but it's not that bad

anyway free stuff is free, but i would srsly recommend some new acer led's they have great colours, very reach, benq is just plain borring with his greyish blacks and not so white whites
i'm not picky but i surely see the difference, besides acer leds 23" goin out for 150 euro atm in informatique

I love my sammy. It's really great for gamin and all purposes, but when I'm doing any design work, man do the colors change :\ If I put my head a bit too low the colors change wildly! grinhurt

But that's the disadvantage of TN...

Think I'll just go to a shop and do some side by side comparisons. I'm definitely gonna get a 24'' though. Scratching the LED what regular 24'' LCDs would you recommend raising the budget a bit also?

EDIT: Actually returning to LEDs is the Samsung BX2431 that I mentioned above any good?
EDIT2: How does the Samsung P2450H compare against P2470H

May I throw the U2410 in the mix?

http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/products/Monitors/productdetail.aspx?c=us&l=en&cs=19&sku=320-8277

Not as cheap, but quality is the name of the game. Still cheap when considering its H-IPS and color quality.

No difference between LED and CCFL you mean, as they're both LCD displays Smile

LED only refers to the backlight used, which would be LEDs (duh) instead of the old cathode that's been around for decades Razz

Can't find much about the BX2431, but the 2470H is a good unit, and quite a lot better than the 2450H. Very accurate colours on the 2470, nice and responsive. Doesn't upscale stuff very well, but that's not much of an issue Smile

No that trend has been going on for a while, because "Full-HD" and "1080p" are key marketing words Sad

what about BX2450? Spec wise it looks almost identical to the BX2431.

They are starting to disappear because panel manufacturing plants are converting the 16:10 lines into 16:9 ones, and there are handful of such manufacturing plants in the world. Just not economical anymore to keep the 16:10 lines. And you don't want resellers to use old panels for their 16:10 models.

hmmm and i wanted to blame consoles, mainly ps3, which does not support custom resolutions like 360 does, so if u have 16:10 panel with no 1:1 pixel mapping, everything looks stretched

Not much on that either, but there are some simple reviews on its smaller brother the 2350. From what I can gather (none of the reviews I found have any form of proper colour checking and such, all subjective reviews) it has good contrast, bit dull colours and a bit of backlight bleeding, but a decent unit overall.

Well they are to blame, but only partially. People are now opening to 16:9 televisions (as opposed to 4:3). 16:10 is looked at as computer aspect ratio, same now as before, but the difference is people now use LCD monitors as televisions and vice-versa, blending the differentiation. Same panels, or at least same manufacturing lines for panels, can be used for both TVs and monitors.
