You'll also get banned from PSN |
How would they be able to distinguish a normal user from a pirate if you sign the firmware and games with the same keys they use? I read somewhere that Sony would have to adjust metldr but they can't do this without compromising IBM secrets (the encryption could be compared and cracked). Also, every game released up until now would be useless on these hypothetical PS3's because the keys are different.

various options. think twice. think to the initial microsoft's xlive bans on xbox1. they will check hard drive characteristics, presence of certain files, etc... all which is not similar to a stock ps3 is a potential psn ban trigger |
I believe there is no way for Sony to keep you from going online once the custom firmware starts rolling out, simply because it will be authored just like the real deal. Even if your hardware characteristics are off, they could just spoof the right data. Apparently hackers haven't had this much room to play with (on every layer of code) since the Dreamcast.

Not sure if i should create a separate thread since most of my questions are about using a hacked ps3.
I am going to buy a ps3 - and would like to have a few things clarified.
1. Is there a difference between slim/normal in regards of using the current dongles/future possible hacks? I was kinda eyeing the 320gb GT5 slim boundle - should i worry about the firmware version installed on it?
2. Another question is the hdd size. Do the current hacks allow to change the internal HDD and/or use the external HDD both for normal PS3 stuff and storing ripped games? Maybe i should just buy a console with the smallest possible hdd and then upgrade it with one of my older harddrives?
3. Do the current hacks interfere with the bluray functionality?

there is no difference between fat and slim in terms of using psjb, which soon won't be necessary anyways, except for switch in the back

1.I think the most recent consoles are shipped with FW 3.50, which is downgradeable to 3.41. To tie in with question 3, when downgrading certain (old, the ones with 256MB nand chips with backwards compatibility) PS3's, you lose blu-ray functionality. You might want to read the following two articles though:
http://psx-scene.com/forums/f118/brand-new-ps3-3-5-firmware-not-downgradeable-73209/
http://psx-scene.com/forums/f118/list-consoles-lose-blu-ray-movies-after-downgrade-73430/
Question 2: Yes, most games can be played from the external HDD, some require the internal HDD (games with files over 4GB in size per file) that can be replaced by a small 5400RPM HDD (I think 2.5").

brilliant news. it will be a media centre before long then! and custom loaders etc. sweet.
i wonder how long it'll take until someone actually produces a hack which we can use to play anything really easily...
... also, how easy is it going to be for the end user to initate the hack? will it be as simple as installing a package, or will we require yet more hardware to initiate it for the first time?

Like I said, because of these "Public" private keys Sony's security is like a gaping hole, so we'll see all sorts of homebrew, with no way for them to plug it with new firmware updates or other economic solutions.
