If you're updating to newer FW, you shouldn't lose ANYTHING. At all. It's only downgrading that seems to format your HDD.

sabin can u shed some light on this perhaps ? its not clear to me wheter the cfw for download can be used instaltly, like:
like download the file, extract to a memorystick, have ps3 update from the memorystick. is that all to it or am i missing steps ? |
NO. If you do that; you'll brick your machine. This is a PATCH for a firmware FILE. Follow the instructions laid out by Waninkoko TO THE LETTER. If you don't, or can't, then wait for someone else to do it for you.

Bought my PS3 about 2 months ago and I think it came with 3.42, but I updated as soon as an update was released by Sony and ended up on 3.55. I flashed my console with egohots version when it was released.
So.. today I patched the official firmware (which I downloaded from Sony today) with Waninkoko's patch, Installed the official firmware (3.55) in recovery mode FIRST, then installed the patched firmware. I followed all instructions to the letter.

Awesome, thank you matey! I think I'll be waiting a while anyhow, want to see what this new "alternative" way from Waninkoko is - and I'll wait to hear from more people I trust to see if this whole thing works. Also curious to know if the current crop of 3.55-signed homebrew apps work on Waninkoko's 3.55. The reason I'm curious is because they ONLY work on 3.55-GEO since he disabled the PKG signing check on his FW, that disablement won't be part of any other, like Waninkoko's version.

Yikes, I guess this is what we all get for being impatient!
Still, i'm sure all this will get ironed out. If it's working for some people, then it's possible. Just give it time I guess.
And good morning Sabin you lazy bugger.

I did a test with blackbox ftp from here:
http://psx-scene.com/forums/f6/first-signed-homebrew-packages-released-75125/
and it didn't work with wankikoko's 3.55, trying to install ended in error: 80029564.

Aye, I thought as much. How about non-signed PKGs? Like the ORIGINAL Blackb0x.. can you try with that please? <3

Installation of original blackb0x works, but trying to run it results in error 80010009.

Oh boy. I'm sticking to 3.41 for now then, I'm not prepared to lose my other homebrew stuff just for PSN and backup support :\ Thank you for your time, caserv!

Give it a day Sabin and there will be loads of tools that work on 3.55 given the new, long term approach.

Only thing that i have gotten to work is multiMAN 01.12.05 (2MB - PKG & INI) (For firmwares 03.40 - 03.42).
Old (couple months or so) PSN game installs w/debug patch that i have, also fail with the same error as the original blackb0x ftp.
If there's something else you would like me to test, just ask and I will test when I have some free time.
edit: Did a quick test with Super_Stardust_HD_v5.00.US.PSN-DRM. Installation worked, but running it gives the error: 80010009.

Could someone help me out here?
I kinda missed the whole recent developments and now I'm sitting here with a 3.50 fat ps3... what do I have to do to run mass effect 2 on it?
I don't really need all the details, I'm sure I can find those, but just some general directions would be nice as to what you have to do.
Update to 3.55 custom firmware? modify eboot? downgrade? I just don't get it all anymore.

Way too many brick reports for my taste, i'll wait a few days. No need to update anyway.
Quote: | 99011 08:29 @flukes1 • i see what wanin did

99026 08:31 @flukes1 • to make room for a bigger payload
99027 08:31 @flukes1 • no surprise it randomly bricks, that's asking for trouble
99046 08:33 @flukes1 • he did everything directly to lv2
99047 08:33 @flukes1 • you don't need to compromise lv1 if you do that
99048 08:33 @flukes1 • but its far more risky |
But TBH, serves the psxscene noobs kinda right. So much stupidity in one place.

Seems my model (CECHA-60GB) has bricked for everyone who tried it. That's enough confirmation for me to stay the hell away. Oh well. Stick to 3.41 then ^_^
I do have to say one thing though; I wish someone would smack that Mathieulh prick right in the mouth, because he's pissing me off to no end.

you can't help but laugh at those people whining about bricks. "i bricked not one but TWO or maybe THREE of my ps3's... waaaah". if you're getting bricks then someone obviously shit in the punch bowl and you need to wait for someone to scoop that turd out before having a drink. it's good though because mostly likely those darwin award winners would be the same ones who would be cheating like hell and ruining it for everyone else.

Sigh. These people need some brains. I woke up to check a download and this happens. Honestly I'm not surprised people would continue to risk their consoles without first checking if it was safe but at the same time there are a lot of derps who wouldn't bother checking comments. News sites really need to update their posts.
Back to bed for me (2am) hopefully wake up to less rage.
