|
 |
Ok the recordable DVD9 discs have been out for ages now and every burner sold today can burn in dual layer, but no mass production of the discs.
You can buy them seprately for outrageous prices, when are they going to put the DVD9 discs in full production so they can be sold cheaply in a spindle pack like the DVD5 are sold in today.
It feels like something is holding back the recordable DVD9 discs, wonder if MPAA has anything to do with this hold back of the discs?
It didn't take this long to get the DVD5 discs out to mass production, I think it's very suspicious.
But you can't make a prefect copy of a movie with a DVD5 disc, but with a DVD9 you can make a prefect 1:1.
I wrote Verbatim but got no answer or explaination form them.

cant be bothered with them cos of the price... £3 for unbranded DVD9 Disc or £8 for branded is just stupid..
A DVD Film costs aroun £12... a good DVD9 costs £8... I would rather just pay the extra £4 and get it on a real disc

i only burnt one dvd9 so far, just too expensive and i doubt they get as cheap as dvd5 any time soon, the manufacturing process is just too complex and the yield is still very low

btw, i posted that the new ricoh dl media went retail a while ago. The production process of these DL are different and should result in lower prices, but so far that's not happing, they still cost 5 euro, and most writers handle them poorly:

I will search for some info on the production process...
Edit:
k, found some info. This will show you the difference between the two production methods:
1. Verbatim (Layered System Manufacturing - 2P System)
http://www.cd-info.com/tech/media/dl.html
2. Ricoh (Inverted Stack Manufacturing System)
http://www.ricoh.com/media/dvd/tech.html
Quote: | Some advantages of this system are ;
(1) Manufacturing of discs A and B proceeds in parallel up to the adhesion process, so it enables a high volume production.
(2) In the “layered system”, a stamper needs to be peeled off between the formation processes of the two recording layers. This process requires a plastic stamper. The Inverted Stack Manufacturing System, however, can use a regular metal stamper with high durability at lower costs.
(3) Since discs A and B are manufactured independently and adhered at the end of the process, the testing precision can be dramatically improved. |
