So for the folks who still plan on staying on the 3.41 JB method, what are the chances that this EBOOT patching method would be rendered useless with the next Sony update?

Wasn't releasing those keys supposed to end this "being afraid of the next firmware" bullshit?

You don't need Geohot's FW. Sigh.

http://psx-scene.com/forums/f6/backup-manager-patch-cfw-released-76786/

Follow that. To the letter. Only that. Nothing else. At all. Period. At all.

When you're on 3.55 OFW, and you have patched the 3.55 OFW PSUPDAT.PUP with the patcher linked in the first post, then dropped to Recovery Mode and installed the newly created PSUPDAT.PUP, you WILL see "Install Packages" on the XMB. You will. That's it. You will. I promise. You won't need Geohot's version after that, you can just use Kmeaw's one alongside the LV2.PKG.

It stands to reason that the current 3.41 decryption will continue working for as long as games don't fully utilise 3.5x SDK. Once games come out that were made with/for and absolutely require 3.5x... you'll be SOL then. As for the keys being the end of firmware upgrade fear? No, that was never an option. There is ALWAYS going to be a battle with Sony; they'll put out a new firmware, the hackers have to crack it, ad infinitum.

You create it Razz Open the USB stick in explorer, New Folder>PS3, open PS3, New Folder>UPDATE. Stick your newly created/patched .PUP into the UPDATE folder. Stick the USB stick in PS3. Select "System Update > External Media". Profit!

you create it on a removable device, a usb stick or something. Just create Folder PS3 on root, then UPDATE inside it and drop the file there

dont even come close to any WD scorpio drives,
buy either samsung or seagate to be on the safe side.

PROTIP: with samsung you ll probably have to place a jumper or use ES TOOL
to put it into SATA 150 mode, with seagate you most likely wont have to.

This may not be allowed, but can anyone point me in the direction of a good ROM site for the FBA emulator on PS3? It would be greatly appreciated.

If you feel like visiting gameternity, you might want to check out the subdomain download. If you're feeling lucky, you may even be inclined to add /files/roms/final_burn_alpha/ to the end.

If it's a 2.5" SATA drive that is no thicker than 9.5mm, then yes =)

I recently bought a 640GB Sammy SpinPoint M7 and it RAWKS. Shame the PS3 steals 10%... in the end I was left with less than 530GB usable.

@sabin
stupid question how exactly, after installing OFW 3.55, do I enter recovery mode?
and after I installed the CFW in recovery mode, do I restart my PS3 in normal mode and apply the lv2 patch or should the patch be applied each time in recovery mode?

Accessing the PS3 Recovery Menu (Safe Mode)

With the system in standby mode. Press and hold the power button down until the system turns on and then off again. Release the power button. Very important to hold the power button until the console shuts off and to release the power button before continuing to step 2.

After about 1 - 2 seconds press and hold the power button again, until you hear 2 consecutive beeps. Release the power button. During this step you will actually here three beeps. There will be one single beep then a short delay followed by the 2 consecutive beeps. Only release the the power button after the 2 consecutive beeps.

You will then be instructed to plug in a controller, via the usb cord, and press the PS button.

At this point the PS3 Recovery Menu will be shown on the screen.

Once you've installed your CFW (in recovery mode) the machine will restart itself. The LV2.pkg needs to be installed only once .. but it needs to be ran once every time you reboot your PS3. IN XMB, not recovery. When installed it acts like any normal homebrew app.

The WD drives have issues with PS3s. I bought a 500gb WD and the games frequently crashed, but worked fine on other HDDs. There's some info buried somewhere in this thread about it, and I think there's some info on psx-scene about it too. Could possibly search for it. In short, stick to the sammy/seagates.

That one =) Perfectly safe, if you follow the instructions properly, and no reported bricks or bans or crashes yet. If you update you won't lose any saves, any data of any kind, and yes; with the 3.55 app pack; FTP homebrew like Blackb0x works perfectly. All your apps do need to be 3.55 signed though, keep that in mind.

List of apps signed for 3.55.

-edit-

Don't worry guys, I'll update my PS3 Info thread tomorrow. It's been a hectic day so far and there's been a lot of info to keep track of.

Yup! Just remember; the external drive has to be FAT32 and that means no games with individual files over 4GB.

Maybe it's not all WDs and you'll get lucky. I just know mine had issues and then people telling me on this thread that it was a known issue with WDs. Good luck!
