It's not fully the black peoples fault, but they do a damn good job themselves to make sure it sticks.

Cause I totally disagree with the publisher of Twain's Classic Huck Finn removing the word 'nigger' from it text. They are fucking up a classic piece of literature...if your going to censor twain, why not byron or keats or shakespear or hell, even the bible (which is 100 percent mysogyonistic).
I dont understand the big deal.
Anyone can be a 'nigger'....all it means is unclean/dirty...stupid southern american slave owners turned a rather benign term into the symbol of racism.
Being mixed, i take no offense to the word nigger unless it is said to me with hate. Then its more about the fact that the person would say something so hateful, not the word itself. |
I totally disagree with removing the word "nigger" from Huck Fin. The part I remember best is when 2 people, one huck was talking about a train wreck and it was asked if anyone was killed. The answer was "no" just 2 (forgot how many) niggers. The importance of that passage was to demonstrate racism. -That no 'people' were killed, that blacks weren't considered people and that time and place in history. Removing popular references, and slang of race from Literature is almost like rewriting history. That passage struck me hard as a kid because I never grew up with that word. It really made a impact on me at hold unfair, callous, and exploitive racism was.
I think the main reason it was taken out wasn't because it offended black people but because it made white people reflect on racism and they were uncomfortable
Personally it is not a word I use. Don't say it to my black friends because I am white. If I see a white person use it in speech in a non-hating way I can't help but judge them, like they are trying to be cool or something. If I hear someone use it in hate I remove myself from their offending presence. If I hear it in the workplace and everyone stayed silent, I would say something directly to them. If they continued it I would file a formal complaint.
my 2 cents (why is there no cent symbol on the keyboard?) very slow posting Grrrr!
