|
 |
http://www.gamasutra.com/view/news/33347/Valve_Unveils_Steam_Guard_For_Account_Security.php
Valve announced Steam Guard, a new feature designed to enhance security on its Steam and Steamworks platforms by preventing unauthorized modifications or changes to user account settings.
Steam Guard allows users to link their account to a specific PC -- any attempts to log into that account or make any changes to its settings from other PCs will notify the user and request their approval. Third party developers will be able to incorporate Steam Guard into their applications through Steamworks.
The new feature takes advantage of Intel's upcoming Identity Protection Technology (IPT), an encrypted, hardware-based feature available with 2nd Generation Intel CoreT and Intel CoreT vProT processors. IPT generates a new numerical password every 30 seconds, similar to security cards or key fobs.
Since the digital distribution platfom launched in 2003, Valve's Steam has attracted over 30 milion active accounts around the world, and more than six million of those users access Steam every day. The company's Steamworks publishing suite has shipped over 200 titles since launching three years ago.
"Account phishing and hijacking are our #1 support issues," says Valve president Gabe Newell. "With Intel's IPT and Steam Guard, we've taken a big step towards giving customers the account security they need as they purchase more and more digital goods."

I think you didn't read it properly. I can access youtube from any PC I want whenever I want. Valve will allow you the option to restrict other PCs from logging in with your username & password.
This option doesn't exist on youtube and likewise youtube's email restriction doesn't exist on Steam.

regardless of whatever they will come out with
STUPID people will get HACKED no matter one. No firewall/Antivirus
with passwords such as "12345" or simply "password"
I read a lot of World Of Warcraft forums and its filled with people who had their account stolen/hacked
First of all, they do not have Authenticator ( Physical item that generates six digit number and lasts for minute to log into the game or website..Can get it for Iphone/ipod as well)
No security software at all installed and clicking phishing emails..
If you do not take few minutes to secure your own computer, you should be punished
You can't fix stupid

It has nothing to do with firewalls or antivirus, I could have no firewall, and no antivirus, and still wont have any accounts stolen. Its all the kids, who search for "world of warcraft hacks" and things like that.
But yes, you cannot fix the stupid

Well, with Steam Guard hackers can't get access your account unless they get physical access to your PC. This kinda fixes even stupid.
But.. thinking of it, obviously there must be a "back door" for every owner of a Steam account, because in case your computer breaks down, surely that doesn't mean you lost access to your account forever..? So maybe hackers can still somehow take advantage of that "back door", whatever it might be...
I suppose we'll know more soon.. perhaps around Portal 2's release..

Same thing with WoW authenticator. It is an physical item that you carry around whether you would like to log into the game.
My point is, this creates too much hassle for people to type in a random sequence of numbers each time they would like to play a game therefore opt-out of such a feature.

Kinda missed that... So if your email gets hacked they can still hack into your Steam account... oh... ok then.. stupid is still not being fixed guys!

To be honest, I think this is a bad idea ... if only due to this part; "any attempts to log into that account" That's a very annoying thing. If the tech was just to stop people making alterations to the account without approval from the yourself/account holder, then yay! But considering Steam is built around the fact that you can use it from any location and any computer.... I just think having to constantly approve your own login when using another computer is an annoying step.

Well I personally am with Sabin on this one, I think its a slow process of taking away exactly that. Do you know how many games I have tried, played, and beaten, just by using my friends steam account?
I think they want to stop that.

Or they don't want their customers that have spent thousands of $$$ on their games, to lose them because their account was hacked.
They've also added Steam Cloud the previous year. Do you also believe that their plan was to make it mandatory and allow saving ONLY on their servers?

Whenever someone or something is trying to "protect" you, their is generally something deeper to it. The fact is this wont protect peoples accounts getting hacked, you know that, we know that. Valve knows that.

Idk my AV is protecting me just fine and there's nothing deeper to it. It's free because MS wanted to release it for free. Ya know, because it's bad business for them for their customers to get viruses??? And they don't want bad publicity?

AV software also can't protect you for everything and at all times. Should I uninstall it because it's not 100% perfect?

Another example: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MobileMe#Find_My_iPhone
Apple added "Find My iPhone" to MobileMe that helps you... find your iphone in case it gets stolen. What was the sinister secret motivation they had that they tried to camouflage by saying it's to "protect" you?
Or you know.. they are just offering the option to better protect your device you paid hundreds of $$$ to buy, because it's a good thing to have happy customers?

i'm sorry. But, if I recall correctly, steam is made for playing games?
Your analogy dosen't work because antivirus software is made for one thing, to protect your pc from viruses. Not to protect YOU, and at that 80% of the virus protection out their, is a virus itself.
Microsoft antivirus for one, Norton, Mcacffee etc. So that again, proves my point,as all three of those organizations use their software to monitor what you do on the PC, and then sell that information. And at that, they ruin your PC as well, just like a virus...
Oh, and an IPHONE? I'm never gonna loose steam, its on my hard drive. Iphones are overprices, useless, and they aren't anything special.
And yes, I have a problem with being able to GPS in on my location VIA cellphone.
Steam security is good enough as is, your account cant truly get "hacked" unless a individual falls for a easy to catch phishing scam.
PC Specs: A Maganavox' Odyssey
Tweaked to play Frogger, Lemmings & GTA4

yes, valve isn't adding features just out of pure generosity, it is because it increase the value of steam service, and therefore is good for business
this particular feature is being brought because valve is wasting thousands of hours in customer service just to reset passwords because accounts were stolen, and it's a waste of money
nothing to do with some conspiracy bullshit
valve already tied password change with email confirmation, i think it was a year ago, i guess it wasn't enough
i only log in steam from a single computer (and even if i had to use another one, i'm sure valve will allow to register more than one computer, like facebook), and i really care about my steam account, which has more and more value, and i will use that feature, as i use it on facebook

The only conspiracy that revolves around valve is Episode 3. I never meant it was some crazy conspiracy, and no, i don't think people at valve really care for their customers.

If they really want to limit the accounts to a PC, it's so simple to do.. MS did it in 2001 with no special tech: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_XP#Product_activation_and_verification
Or you can still believe they somehow try to do this by waiting for everyone to get an intel CPU

its not all stupid users, for almost a year the source code of the steam login encryption saved in the registry.blob or something file was available, many many many tools got created where if you run the exe it would send your login to ftp , php script etc.
Since the source was available to anyone with google you could make your code easely undetected to anti virus apps, i have seen many go on a rampage, some stealing hundreds of accounts.
the stealer got put in legal mod downloads, mappacks, cheats that worked or didnt work, and unless you had your firewall manually set to very tight , you wouldnt have known your steam account was stolen till it was too late.
