Combat looks exactly like the WoW skill rotation ad nauseam. I will try it, but won't buy unless it has a deep RPG system, which it won't, because allegedly that doesn't sell enough.

The space combat looks like space invaders with slightly better graphics.

Nice dev walkthrough: http://www.swtor.com/media/trailers/taral-v-developer-walkthrough
It definetely looks like WoW in Star Wars univrsum. Question is, will there be enough new/revamped elements to make it fresh for people who played a lot in WoW. The SW setting alone won't be enough.

I think the game will be perfect for those, who are bored of WoW, but not of WoW's gameplay. It will be a success, I am certain of it.

wow didnt invent that game mechanic, it was there many year before. And it works and people like it, for the most part.
If you want to smash this game of which you have little to no info besides a couple vids, go ahead, but at least have VALID points lol.
back to Anarchy Online i go |
Yes, the mechanics were there before, but never as streamlined and derp-safe as before. Also, I have played - or tested - most of the major MMOs since Meridian (since I was a kid).
Why must you assume, that when I say WoW, I mean the underlying mechanic? I don't. I mean exactly what I said instead, I mean the way WoW approached it.
Now on to the second point: a couple of videos, presentations and info about the design philosophy (as according to developers) coupled with knowledge of how the market is perceived by the publisher, it is grounds enough to draw conclusions. If all our great scientists waited out everything, instead of using deduction to formulate opinions, we would still be in the 19th century. We have enough data to draw conclusions.
The game looks and plays like WoW, aside from having a somewhat different cool down mechanic - talent trees are exactly the same (deep, and not wide at all with two branches at a time - at most).
The game will be a fool proof, casual game, aimed at the same sort of people, who play WoW.
You can save this here post - I assure you, it will stand the test of time - and we can come back in a year, and see if I should or shouldn't have made up my mind based on, as you put it "a few videos" (when in fact, I used much more data than that to make up my mind).

i dont like what i see either, dont get me wrong, i went back to play AO BECAUSE of its way more complicated, or deep, nature and quit WoW because it became very boring (having a blst atm in AO, which has seen tons of new stuff ingame). In several posts i already mentioned my dislike and why. While i agree that the talent trees in WoW are shallow (because they give more a illusion of deepness more than actual deepness ...), are you sure its same in SWToR ? (not saying it is or isnt, havent seen anything, link ?), combat wise, i dont care if its "like wow" or any mmoRPG. AO is like that too, kinda, and its a good thing. ANd even in WoW it requires skill to use the right ability at the right time etc (you cant button smash, believe me), alltho im more into pvp, so there, reflexes and reflection count a lot more than in a pve environment i guess

Great another boring, generic, point and click game that I can waste thousands of dollars playing untill the next generic, point and click, boring game that is exactly the same but in a different setting comes out.

Well...it can be point and click...
I would prefer "hold and tap keys", but hey:)
Honestly? For some of us, a WoW clone in ANY OTHER SETTING would be enough.
Let's face it, the market has spoken. People like WoW. But it doesn't have lightsabers.
So, if WoW = 8 and lightsabers = 4, then WoW + lightsabers = 12, and since 8 < 12, ToR wins.
Math doesn't lie.

I too am a PvP player, but I haven't PvP'd in an MMO since Conan, I think, that was 2 years ago. MMO PvP just hasn't been done as I wished yet, I believe - or I have not seen it. I turn to shooters and strategies for PvP - sure, you don't have the investment in to your character, like you do in an RPG, but at least it's balanced, fair, and all about skill. (I mainly play tf2 and sc2 these days).
And yes, AO is one hell of a game, very underrated - it's by far the most complex land bound MMO out there, and I love it. I've played it for around 2.5-3 years.

OT.
Sin, how is the population in AO? Are there enough people playing? Are you playing a high level character or started from scratch? Do you play mostly on Rubi-ka or shadowlands?
On-topic: If you want to see a copy of WoW, play Rift. It's like 1-1 duplicate, although they did add enough of new things to make it fun. (I'm enjoying it).
Having played many MMOs before WoW ever came out, I don't really see a connection between this game and wow.

Population is quite high (always tons of people online, easy to group etc). Lately, i play mostly on RK, with some stints in the shadowlands for xp (200+ missions to get xp). atm i have a lvl 150 fixer with whom i gather money in a alien sector (called sector 10, drops items that can be sold for 4 mio a pop to a npc) and he also rocks in pvp (highly twinked now hehe), my main is a currently level 203 Martial Artist who is becoming quite a beast in PVM.
Oh and im hardcore twinking a level 25 trader for tower wars ^^

Thanks for the info Sin. I have a 195 lvl soldier but I borrowed my account to an internet friend a long time ago and he didn't want to give it back to me. I can get the pass from customer support using the original serial keys, but he manages to get the password back as well, every time. Sent CS another mail hoping to get some help on the issue. Invested so much time in that char damn it.

Gah, AO was ruined like three-four years back. Used to be the best MMORPG by far, but ever since Shadowlands it's been declining. Pre-shadowlands AO is probably the most fun I've had playing a game.
Anyone know how it went with that fan project to bring back the good old StarWars Galaxies pre-CU thing?
