cpu: i5 2500K
mobo: asus sabertooth P67 (B3) or P8P67 rev3
gfx: ati 6950
now i know jack shit about the current memory situation, which one would be a good idea to go for? (probably gonna need 4-8gb)
and about the PSU, will my 5 year old one (decent 500W piece, currently running an OCed amd x2 3800, ati 4850 and 4 hdds just fine) suffice for this setup or should i go for a new one?

IMO: Anything G.Skill or OCZ, memory wise, and it depends what PSU you already have. A decent, branded, 500w PSU should be more than capable for the i5-25k and a 6950 -- but you should never skimp on the PSU. Of ALL the components in your machine, that's the one you should aim for getting CLASS.
Again, IMO, Corsair TX/VX series would be great.

PSU is a 500W seasonic, but the question is, would it also be enough if i flash the 6950 to a 6970 and OC the cpu a bit?
and regarding, memory, just go with any 1333mhz cl9 1.5v, from what i've googled so far?

Hmm, I'd say that 800-850 are overkill, 1000-1200 serious overkill and that 600-650 will be the sweet spot for bushwacka's system.
But just wait for Werelds's post.

That's been my PSU for the past ~3 years now.
Handled an overclocked Q8300 + a stock HD4890 without any problems so I'd say... yes.

Take some Corsair Vengeance Kit for your system. Or G. Skill's Ripjaws. Awesome memory solutions. Plus, they're perfectly compliant with Sandy Bridge.

I wouldn't go with OCZ ram. The failure rate of OCZ sticks seems to be relatively high. Stick to G.SKill or Mushkin

Same thing happened to me. I was planning to buy I think a dell back in November 2009 for like $300 and Sabin and iNatan convinced me to build my own. The initial plan was that I was going to save so much money. Since then, Ive spent close to 2 grand on my rig by now. Its like a drug addiction

God, don't you people sleep? 
First of all: a 500W Seasonic is more than plenty for that hardware. A 980X @ 4.4 GHz with an overclocked 6970 sits around 475W, so you're not gonna get anywhere close to that. Even with good overclocks, you're gonna be sitting at 400 under very heavy load. Your CPU is a lot less consuming than a 980X. If you still wish to leave a bit more room, 650 is plenty even for a 2x6950 setup. With a decent build PSU that's more than fine, even noise wise; most notably Seasonic have their cooling in order, and I never hear my X-650.
Quick note about the TX-series btw: make sure you get the "V2" ones, they are Seasonic builds and far superior to their "V1" CWT builds.
While I'm all for leaving a bit of room (hence me going for an X-650), don't overdo it. Under 20% and over 80% load PSU's get exponentially more inefficient, which results in more heat and thus more noise. I can show you the math, but you probably care more about the actual numbers so the "sweet spot" for any reasonable setup (read: no 480's/580's and i7 980X's) is between 550 and 750W depending on the total setup. With a PSU in that range, you'll sit just above the 20% load when idle, and will only reach 80+% when putting a ridiculous load on your components (Furmark/Linpack).

You mean the TX750 and the TX850, right?
My TX650 is a Seasonic build, and I bought it all the way back in ~2008.

Well yes and no. Yours is the true "V1", but that was discontinued a year later. After yours, they came with a TX-650 that was a CWT build, and the "V2" now is a Seasonic build again. Yours has a basic 80+ certification, the CWT one has no 80+ cert, and the current "V2" has an 80+ Bronze cert, so they're very easy to tell apart

Don't use Overdrive, it's fine for minimal overclocks just like NVIDIA's nTune or whatever they call it now. Download and install MSI Afterburner, by far the best tool to overclock ANY videocard these days. Just make sure to enable "Unofficial overclocking" and enable voltage control. To do that, install it, run it, enable the voltage thing through the normal settings dialog and then shut it down. Head to the installation folder and edit the .cfg file - at the bottom is the unofficial overclocking setting, set it to 1 instead of 0 and you're done

forget the ocz ram, I thought they had stopped making ram now and focusing on ssd's....
would make more sense to go with a brand that is actually still making such modules.
thats not saying ocz is not good btw, i use them right now but for common sense purposes id go with another brand.
