|

It is pretty much agreed upon by many people that Quantum computing is going to be the next evolution
Quote: | Today's computers, like a Turing machine, work by manipulating bits that exist in one of two states: a 0 or a 1. Quantum computers aren't limited to two states; they encode information as quantum bits, or qubits, which can exist in superposition. Qubits represent atoms, ions, photons or electrons and their respective control devices that are working together to act as computer memory and a processor. Because a quantum computer can contain these multiple states simultaneously, it has the potential to be millions of times more powerful than today's most powerful supercomputers.
This superposition of qubits is what gives quantum computers their inherent parallelism. According to physicist David Deutsch, this parallelism allows a quantum computer to work on a million computations at once, while your desktop PC works on one. A 30-qubit quantum computer would equal the processing power of a conventional computer that could run at 10 teraflops (trillions of floating-point operations per second). Today's typical desktop computers run at speeds measured in gigaflops (billions of floating-point operations per second).
Quantum computers also utilize another aspect of quantum mechanics known as entanglement. One problem with the idea of quantum computers is that if you try to look at the subatomic particles, you could bump them, and thereby change their value. If you look at a qubit in superposition to determine its value, the qubit will assume the value of either 0 or 1, but not both (effectively turning your spiffy quantum computer into a mundane digital computer). To make a practical quantum computer, scientists have to devise ways of making measurements indirectly to preserve the system's integrity. Entanglement provides a potential answer. In quantum physics, if you apply an outside force to two atoms, it can cause them to become entangled, and the second atom can take on the properties of the first atom. So if left alone, an atom will spin in all directions. The instant it is disturbed it chooses one spin, or one value; and at the same time, the second entangled atom will choose an opposite spin, or value. This allows scientists to know the value of the qubits without actually looking at them. |

My question is how do you think this is will affect the gaming industry ? Do you think we will finally be able to reach full level realism with those ? IE : You literally play a movie or are projected into a 3D universe similar to reality ?
Aren't possibilities crazy with such calculating power ?

if it gets too realistic chances are it will be illegal. but you know, projected into a 3D universe where you have control and can do anything will be too complicated for the normal gamer and we can't have that now can we?

In about >100 years sure why not...
"Quantum mechanics is actually, contrary to it's reputation, unbeliveably simple, once you take the physics out."

This! Even now, with today's technology, games are a scapegoat for the industry due to the interaction between player and machine and the levels of gore/violence/etc. That's just with Little Timmy pressing buttons or moving a mouse .... imagine the uproar if you could have even more powerful hardware, capable of infinitely more realistic visuals/interactivity?

Ban these murder simulators - why won't someone think of the children!!!!

Now i know that there is a difference between watching and playing but still.. |
That's what the critics are talking about mate; the very nature of interaction. Watching a violent movie, they say, isn't the same as literally INTERACTING with it -- they argue that by playing the game, you're taking part in the violence yourself.

Not necessarily. You still have to program for it, and if you make it too complex it can easily slip out of your hands. It's also nowhere near enough processing power to simulate an actual 'full level realism' world filled with atoms, photons, real physics and whatnot. It'll definitely help greatly with stuff such as pathfinding though, and having advanced water physics effects and such shouldn't be a problem anymore. But you can never have too much processing power.
As for actual graphics, I don't really think we need quantum processors for those. We'd already have far better graphics if not for the consoles holding the developers back. And right now the problem isn't even the graphical effects, but the textures and game art.

We were born too early.
We will never ascend towards the stars, visit your ancestor's genetic memories or bang the woman of your dreams in the intimacy of your empty home.
I like how the first subject that rose up was porn. Oh porn, you so silly!

just forget all this shit ATM.
Look at the notorious "3D PC gaming". Just laugh, huh.

The biggest issue with quantum computers, after they get available, will be software related. It would need completely different approach in programming.
Even today programmers struggle with threaded programming to make most of multi-core machines (without wasting cycles, or freezing the games due to deadlock).
Using quantum computers would be much more drastic change then that.

All I know is that the kids growing up with those must become a generation of murderers and rapists. I mean, I was 8 when I played RotT and I've been playing "violent" games since forever (Duke, Harry and the likes fall in that category too right?), thoroughly enjoying games like SoF along the way. By today's standards I am one seriously fucked up individual, and overdue for my shooting spree in a random school.
