I'm running the game on medium settings and - the camera and overall controls are laggy. Is this because my pc is too old or is the game poor optimized? Any lag for people with high end pcs ?

I have a gtx 570 and I run it on ultra settings, but if I turn on SSAO or DoF it brings performance down a lot. Also I have unit detail on medium, otherwise if I zoom in on battles I get 15 fps. I've seen a lot of people on Twcenter and the official forums who are having performance problems so I hope it's fixed in a driver or patch.

I run it with everything on ultra and all the boxes ticked, no slowdowns at all. Only if I run the combat on max speed and there's thousands of troops on both sides.

Machine specs in the sig.

(I run the game on the desktop, not on the laptop Razz )

That shopt does the game no justice. The AA is off, sky/water/shadows are off, everything else is on ultra, also all other tickable options are off (HDR, SSAO, Haze distortion, etc). So most of the fancy-shmancy stuff are off, looks way batter with those on.

more ships! 3 fleets should do it.

as for performance, the game runs fine for me on high using a core 2 quad q8300 OC@3ghz and a radeon 6950. fps drops when I zoom into a spot where craploads of units are clumped together fighting but overall it's very fluid and nice.

and yeah, whoever said archers are worthless... wtf? Archers are so powerful in this game... I often tear up units with archers as they charge and they are shattered and routed before they even get in melee range of anything.
You also don't want to be caught on either side of a siege battle without archers because the AI doesn't hesitate to rip you to shreds from range. and those castle walls don't help much.

Is the campaign mode fun (with story behind it etc)? Or is it a compilation of battles?

Errr...I assume you never played TW games before.

Campaign mode is set on a big map (this time on the Japan Islands), get a starting territory, a few units and generals, and you're on your own from there. No story per se, except the one you make for yourself. And it's not just a series of battles either, you decide where and when to attack (except if you are being attacked of course).

I played Rome and Medieval long ago. Someone here mentioned there were awesome cutscenes (I seem to remember), so I assumed they had added a story part. I might've seen that comment in another thread though.

The only cutscenes I can think of right now are the general speeches at the beggining of battles, but nothing else really. Smile

They'd be talking about the pop-up pre-rendered cutscenes for ninja assassinations and the like. That's a homage to the original Shogun (and the original Medieval had them as well as I recall).

controls are fine, game might be laggy, turn off shadows and you get 2x fps.. its quite insane how big boost you get after turning fps, i went from constant 15-25~ to constant 40-60+ while turning shadows off.. and even managed to turn some settings to max cuz of that

sure it looks strange without shadows sometimes, but having fluid game and fluid zoom in > shadows

once the shogun realises your clan is a threat and declares war on you and other clans become hostile to you - does the 'realm divided' -relation thing ever disappear? im finding it extremely difficult being at war with everyone with nobody to trade with. cant imagine playing the 'long' campaign and grinding it out like this for most of the game.
actually, i would have JUST managed to come out on top but one misclick cost me the victory in my first campaign - 3 years before the end i am at 24 provinces and have all the necessary ones i disband troops in some backwater provinces (that are never going to be touched in the fighting) to allow me to drop tax levels - but instead of clicking the 'finances' button i click the 'end turn' button. queue rebellions with massive armies in those backwater (necessary to victory) provinces, with my armies halfway across japan - having lost all naval dominance when the shogun declared war on me and all the navies of japan zerged my meager navies there is no way to get them back home and taking back the rebellious provinces in time for 1580.

also, it seems taking kyoto told everyone start acting like idiots - my vassals are attacking each other, and after i help one of them take care of the other the same guy i just supported decides 'oh hi there mister shogun with the greatest clan and army in japan, im gonna declare war on you'.

still, i like this game.

Any way to improve campaign map performance. My fps on battlemap is ok, but its very sluggish on the campaign map, and it doesnt seem like the gfx settings affect the map.

This is actually a decent game, and there aren't many titles I'd call that these days. Certainly wish they'd work some more on the AI( it doesn't actually appear to have improved any since way back to the first or second game; personally I think it's still inferior), but the rest of the game is good. I'd also like if they went back to the tabletop maps instead of the 'realistic environments' stuff', but it's less bothersome here than in the others, much due to smaller provinces I think.

Anyway, great to see it's not all decline. Gonna buy this to tell them they're on the right track.

thanks for the tip. i knew shadows have a big impact on the fps, that's why i went for low shadows but apparently thats not enough, you have to turn them off completely. also 1920x1080 is too much Smile went for 1280x1024 with shadows off on my 5:4 monitor and everything's fine now, the rest of the settings dont really mather.

I have two saves(two separate campaigns) pass 120 turns on the FLT crack; both work fine.
